England turn to Fleming for Test role
England have confirmed the appointment of Stephen Fleming as their new Test head coach as Joe Root returns for a second stint as captain. The ECB have been scouring the market for a new individual to lead the red-ball side after Brendon McCullum was moved aside and told his role is solely focused on limited-overs cricket.
England's Test Series defeat to New Zealand proved the final straw and the country's cricket bosses have again turned to a Kiwi in Fleming. He has enjoyed an 18-year association with Chennai Super Kings whilst he remains New Zealand’s most successful Test captain. Fleiming knows the English county game well having played for Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. With the latter he was able to help lead them to a drought-breaking County Championship title in 2005.
Fleming has also led Southern Brave to the final of The Hundred men's competition in 2023 and his role with England starts after the beginning of the Test Series against Pakistan, which will see Marcus Trescothick come in as interim Head Coach.
