Chantelle Cameron is targeting a career-defining display when she squares off against Mikaela Mayer in their highly anticipated unification bout at the bp pulse LIVE arena in Birmingham on Saturday, August 29.
The British world champion, who holds a record of 22-1 with 8 knockouts, will face the American challenger Mayer, whose record stands at 22-2 with 5 knockouts. The pair will contest the WBC, WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles, with the bout serving as the main event of MVPW-06. Live coverage will air on Sky Sports, with the main card beginning at 7pm.
Every fight on the MVPW-06 card features a British fighter taking on an American opponent, making this an all-UK versus USA showcase. Caroline Dubois is also listed on the Birmingham bill, adding further star power to the evening.
Cameron has dismissed suggestions that Mayer possesses the calibre required to derail her path to victory. The WBO champion believes her preparation has been flawless and that her mindset is precisely where it needs to be heading into fight week.
I really do believe this is going to be a great performance by me - I think it's going to be my best performance of my career, I really do,
Cameron told Sky Sports, outlining her ambitions for the encounter.
I feel like everything's gone well and there's no reason for it to fall apart on fight night. When I'm like this, and I've put the work in and my mindset is where I want it to be, nobody's beating me.
The 26-year-old emphasised that she has completed all the necessary preparation in the gymnasium and that her confidence stems from a methodical approach to her training camp.
I know that all I have to do is do what I've been doing in the gym. I've done everything.
Cameron stressed that entering fight week in peak condition, both physically and mentally, gives her the conviction that victory is within her grasp.
I'm heading into fight week in such a good place - confident and knowing that it's going to take someone really good and special to beat me, and I just don't think that's Mikaela.
She continued with her assessment of what it will take to stop her on the night.
When I'm thinking like that and acting that out in the gym and everything else, I just know that I'm not going to be denied the victory.
Cameron's historic achievement against Taylor
Cameron holds a unique distinction in boxing history: she remains the only fighter to have defeated Katie Taylor, the Irish boxing legend. This achievement weighs heavily on her list of career milestones, and she is acutely aware of how a victory against Mayer would rank among her accomplishments.
It's going to be obviously massive. I am the only one to beat Katie Taylor, so that is going to be hard to top!
Cameron reflected on the significance of her win over Taylor.
I don't think that's ever going to be topped because Katie Taylor is obviously a phenomenal fighter and nobody has beat her. Everyone's tried, but nobody has actually got that win against her, whereas I have.
Nevertheless, Cameron recognises that toppling Mayer would represent a substantial career milestone in its own right. She rates Mayer as a formidable opponent and a pound-for-pound elite fighter.
Mikaela's a great fighter, pound for pound, one of the best. This will be my second highest achievement.
Cameron assessed the competitive balance between herself and her challenger, suggesting the bout could go either way on paper.
I'm going to say it's a 52 per cent versus 48 per cent kind of job - this is a great fight!
She acknowledged that Mayer presents a stern test and that complacency would be a fatal error in the ring.
This is not going to be an easy fight by all means. It's going to be a tough, tough fight, but I know what I'm capable of and I'm excited to execute it.
Cameron concluded by expressing her belief that when she reaches peak performance levels, few opponents can match her intensity and output.
When I have this little bite in me and when I have this little like kick in me, I just think nobody's staying with me!
