Swiss Darts Trophy 2026: Jonny Clayton defeats Luke Humphries to secure fourth Euro Tour title

Jonny Clayton claimed the Swiss Darts Trophy with an 8-4 victory over Luke Humphries in the final in Basel, Switzerland, securing his passage to the Grand Slam of Darts in November.

The triumph represents Clayton's first European title of 2026, his first ranking title of the year and his fourth Euro Tour win overall. According to Sporting Life, the victory moved the Welshman back to world No 5, overtaking James Wade in the rankings.

The contest between Clayton and Humphries proved remarkably tight throughout, with Clayton demonstrating superior finishing on the doubles whilst Humphries showcased the stronger scoring power. According to BBC Sport, the finalists' averages were nearly identical, with Humphries posting 101.75 and Clayton 101.68. Clayton's clinical finishing proved decisive, hitting six 180s to Humphries' four and converting 61.54 per cent of his doubles attempts compared with Humphries' 22.22 per cent.

The pivotal moment arrived in the tenth leg when, after nine consecutive holds of throw, Clayton finally broke through by taking out 26. From that point forward, Clayton held serve and then broke Humphries once more with 46 on D16 to claim the trophy.

It was a great game and a great game to be involved in. Luke on his doubles gave me the chance,
Clayton reflected after his win.
If you want to win these trophies you have to beat people like Luke. It is confidence and a spot in the Grand Slam.

Winning my fourth, to win tournaments, you have to beat the best. You have to beat the boys on form and we were both on form.
He continued:
I am lucky to get through that. It is always good to have confidence in any game of darts. Who knows what happens - I feel good and I am enjoying my game.

Clayton had faced a desperate situation heading into Basel. According to Darts News, the Welshman had missed out on Grand Slam qualification in Amsterdam, making the Swiss Trophy his final opportunity to secure a spot at the November event. The £35,000 winner's prize also ended a 17-month drought for ranking silverware, with Clayton averaging 102.7 across the tournament.

Clayton's path to the final

The Welshman's journey to the final began with a commanding 6-2 quarter-final victory over Karel Sedlacek. Clayton reeled off two separate runs of three consecutive legs to secure the dominant win, claiming three breaks of throw in the process.

In the semi-final, Clayton faced world No 3 Gian van Veen and produced a strong 7-4 performance. His 105 average proved the decisive factor as he took control of the match. The early legs remained closely contested, but Clayton seized momentum with a 161 finish on the bull to secure his first break of throw. That advantage extended to a two-leg lead which he maintained as Van Veen struggled on the outer ring, with Clayton eventually clinching the match on D4.

Humphries' route to the final

World No 2 Humphries booked his spot in the final with a 7-4 semi-final victory over Mensur Suljovic. Humphries' performance was marked by a staggering 111.17 average, demonstrating his quality despite the tight scoreline. Trailing 2-0 early on, Humphries produced three 13-dart legs and one 14-dart leg to rattle off four consecutive legs and move ahead. The contest then descended into a pattern of traded breaks as both players exchanged blows for five legs until Humphries eventually held his nerve in the eleventh leg to send Suljovic out.

Humphries reached the semi-finals with a 6-3 quarter-final victory over Cristo Reyes. The encounter proved competitive throughout, but Humphries' superior scoring proved decisive as he claimed four of the final five legs to seal the deal.

Earlier results from Basel

Mensur Suljovic delivered an imperious performance in his quarter-final against Dirk van Duijvenbode, dropping just one leg in a 6-1 victory. The Austrian took four legs in a row from 2-1 up to dominate the contest. The result marked Suljovic's first Euro Tour semi-final since 2021, representing a significant return to form.

Gian van Veen advanced to the semi-finals with a dramatic 6-5 last-leg decider against Bradley Brooks. Van Veen's scoring started slowly, but he fought back effectively, using the pressure to his advantage to secure the result.
