Michael van Gerwen faces a critical test at the Elten Safety Shoes Dutch Darts Championship this weekend, hoping to reverse a troubling recent form slump and secure his place in the European Championship. The draw and schedule for the tournament at MECC Maastricht from October 16-18 have now been released.
The three-time world champion has endured a frustrating spell in recent weeks. He suffered a first-round exit at the World Grand Prix when he fell to Ryan Joyce, then followed that disappointment with a second-round loss to Mensur Suljovic at last weekend's Swiss Darts Trophy.
With the final European Tour event of 2026 taking place on Dutch soil, the stakes could hardly be higher. The top 32 players in the European Tour rankings following this weekend's tournament will qualify for the £750,000 European Championship in Dortmund later this month. Van Gerwen currently sits 18th in the European Tour rankings with £56,000 after 14 events, according to the latest European Tour Order of Merit.
Van Gerwen's last significant tournament victory came at the Nordic Darts Masters in June, where he defeated Luke Humphries in the final. Before that, his most recent major TV title arrived on home soil at the 2025 World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam. The Dutch star will begin his Maastricht campaign against either William O'Connor or Richard Veenstra on Saturday evening.
The tournament structure sees 48 players compete, with 16 seeded players receiving byes into round two. Friday's opening round features 16 matches across two sessions, beginning with an afternoon session at 12pm and an evening session at 6pm.
An all-Dutch encounter will take place on Friday evening when Niels Zonneveld faces Belgian No 1 Mike De Decker. Michael Smith, the 2023 world champion, faces a crucial contest against Stephen Burton in his bid to secure Dortmund qualification. Before Maastricht, Smith occupied 35th place in the European Tour rankings with £27,000, according to the European Tour standings.
Jonny Clayton will begin his defence of his title against either Damon Heta or Maikel Verberk. Clayton recently won the Swiss Darts Trophy, a victory that moved him up to fourth in the European Tour Order of Merit, according to the latest rankings.
The qualification battle remains wide open. Stephen Bunting held the final qualifying spot in 32nd place on £33,000 before the tournament began, with Karel Sedlacek sitting 33rd on £31,000. Meanwhile, according to the European Tour Order of Merit, Ross Smith has already secured first place in the European Tour rankings with £153,000 and will be the top seed in Dortmund.
