Dominguez appears to confirm 64-team plan
CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez has seemingly confirmed FIFA will expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams. The confetti has barely stopped falling in the USA since Spain overcame Argentina in a fiery final in New York. However, attention is already being shifted to the centenary competition, which is mainly grounded in Spain, Morocco and Paraguay, but will also have fixtures taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently opened the door to another expansion, with the recent tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico being the first to feature 48 teams instead of the usual 32. However, while the Swiss boss made it clear plenty needs to be considered before the competition can be expanded again, Dominguez, who is the head of South America's answer to UEFA, appeared to confirm 64 nations will feature in 2030, despite no official word from FIFA being issued.

Not long after the final, Dominguez took to X and wrote:
“The next one is played at home! In 2030, the World Cup comes to Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, a great opportunity for soccer, to celebrate the Centenary of the World Cup with a competition featuring 64 teams.”
The day before, he uploaded a similar tweet ahead of the World Cup final. However, his tone was significantly less certain compared to his recent post.

He wrote:
“We are living through a historic World Cup, the first with 48 teams, a true success. Congratulations dear Gianni Infantino and to all the friends at FIFA for such a great organisation, and congratulations Spain for being the new world champion.
“In 2030, we'll see you at home with the dream of playing it with 64 teams to celebrate the centenary of the World Cup!”
