Argentina president makes surprise call after World Cup final
Argentina's president, Javier Milei, has announced that the nation will have a public holiday when Lionel Messi and co return from the World Cup.
La Albiceleste fell short in their final against Spain and saw ugly scenes at the full-time whistle when members of their team threw punches at the victors. Ferran Torres' goal separated the teams in extra time but Argentina struggled to lay a glove on Spain and did not manage a shot on target.
Instead, their efforts will be remembered for a number of fouls, Enzo Fernandez's red card and the unsavoury scenes upon the final whistle.
Milei, nevertheless, wants to celebrate his country's achievement, having reached a second final in succession after Argentina won the tournament in 2022.
