Ronaldo likes post criticising FIFA
Cristiano Ronaldo has seemingly liked an Instagram post calling FIFA ‘corrupt’ and ‘mafia-like’ just days after the World Cup final. The Portugal icon played in his final tournament this summer, with his nation having reached the round of 16. Portugal were eventually beaten by Spain.
Ronaldo’s long-term rival Lionel Messi did considerably better, having led Argentina to the final just four years after lifting the trophy in Qatar. There was some criticism about their run this time though, with some claiming that the South American nation got some more than favourable refereeing decisions throughout the duration of the tournament.
Spanish journalists Pilar Rodrigues Losantos and Ruben Amon discussed exactly that with FIFA being labelled as “one of the most corrupt institutions on the planet”, as well as “abject, mafia-like, and shameful organisation” by the pair. Ronaldo appeared to like a video of the pair’s discussion on Instagram.
Messi speaks after final heartbreak
Messi for his part spoke out in the aftermath of his side’s final heartbreak. He said:
“The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal. But I also hold onto all the good things... The matches we turned around by giving it our all - moments that will remain in our memories forever - and the support of an entire country which, combined with this group's hard work and effort, brought us back among the world's elite once again.
“It is hard to fully appreciate our achievement right now, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and message.
“Once again, we managed to unite as a country and stand together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentine. I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship.”
Ronaldo reflects on Portugal exit
Ronaldo also released his own statement following Portugal’s exit at the hands of the eventual champions. He said:
“I'm sad to be leaving the World Cup like this.
“I gave it my all. I did my best. It was my last World Cup, yes, but I'll now have time to reflect and be with my family. I won't be making any rash decisions.
“I don't decide anything in the heat of the moment. Now is not important whether I will continue [to play]. Tomorrow I will get up the same way I got up today: with a clear conscience.
“I played 23 years in the national team and won three titles. Before Cristiano, Portugal had not won anything. The Euros was the most important. For me, 2016 has the same dimension as a World Cup, honestly.”
