Will Lankshear's ninth goal of the season sealed victory for Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough marked their 150th anniversary in memorable fashion as Will Lankshear's second-half header delivered a 1-0 triumph against Wolves at a sold-out Riverside Stadium.

The club's sesquicentennial season dates back to the organisation's founding in 1876, when Middlesbrough was established on 20 October 1876 to provide winter sporting opportunities for members of Middlesbrough Cricket Club. The fixture against Wolves was designated as the official anniversary match, and the occasion proved suitably triumphant for the home supporters.

Six days earlier, the Riverside had hosted a Legacy Game featuring almost 100 former players and managers, which finished 8-7 after being 4-4 at half-time, with goals from Danny Graham, Mikkel Beck and Juninho. That celebratory atmosphere appeared to carry through into the anniversary fixture itself.

Prior to kick-off, Boro's supporters in the South Stand unveiled an expansive mural honouring the club's founding players, and the current squad seemed energised by the festive mood as they dominated the opening exchanges.

Lankshear tested Jose Sa early on, first curling a free-kick over the crossbar before forcing the Wolves goalkeeper into a smart save down to his left with an angled strike from the left of the penalty area.

Wolves rarely threatened, with Marshall Munetsi heading Rodrigo Gomes' cross well wide during one of their infrequent attacking moves. Sebastian Berhalter dragged a long-range effort wide for Boro before heading straight at Sa from an Adilson Malanda delivery. Radek Vitek made his first save of the afternoon by parrying away Munetsi's 25-yard strike as the first half drew to a close.

Middlesbrough reasserted control after the interval and broke the deadlock three minutes before the hour. Tommy Conway created space expertly on the left flank to deliver a cross to the back post, and having peeled away from Hugo Bueno, Lankshear outjumped the Wolves full-back to power a header past Sa for his seventh league goal of the season.

The hosts nearly doubled their advantage ten minutes later when Aidan Morris threaded a perfectly weighted pass into Berhalter's path, but the American international could only direct his shot straight at Sa.

Boro came agonisingly close to a second goal with two minutes remaining when substitute Kyle Joseph thumped a header against the underside of the crossbar, though the ball bounced away to safety.

The victory lifted Middlesbrough above West Ham into second position in the Sky Bet Championship table, leaving them just two points adrift of leaders Swansea. For Wolves, the defeat marked their second league loss since their relegation from the Premier League last season.

This was the first league meeting between the two clubs since the 2017-18 campaign, when Wolves won both games that season, 1-0 at home and 2-1 away. The visitors brought a sold-out away allocation of just over 2,000 supporters to the Riverside, but they were unable to trouble the hosts sufficiently to claim a positive result.

What happens next

Middlesbrough will travel to Stoke City on 13 October 2026 as they look to maintain their push towards the top of the Championship standings.
