Kylian Mbappe celebrates after scoring in El Clasico but did he also reveal the flaws in Barcelona's approach?

Welcome to the Euro Debrief, the column in which we round up some of the key stories from the latest matches across the continent. According to Sky Sports, this week's standout narrative centres on Barcelona's first stumble of the season and what it reveals about their Champions League credentials.

LaLiga: Mbappe exposes Barca's structural weakness

Barcelona's remarkable nine-game winning streak at the start of the LaLiga campaign came to an abrupt halt when they fell to Real Madrid 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou in El Clasico. Kylian Mbappe netted both goals for Jose Mourinho's visitors, delivering a masterclass in exploiting the hosts' high defensive line.

Despite their extraordinary opening under Hansi Flick and the thrilling football they have produced, Barcelona's ambitions extend far beyond domestic dominance. Champions League success will ultimately determine whether this season qualifies as a triumph, and their performance against elite opposition will prove decisive in that regard.

The warning signs had already emerged when Barcelona conceded four goals to Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the campaign, though goalkeeper Joan Garcia did restrict the French side to that tally. Against Madrid, however, they could not find an effective solution to prevent their opponents from cutting through the lines with ease.

Mourinho articulated precisely how his team dismantled Barcelona's defensive structure.

It is difficult for any attackers to attack space against Barcelona, the only solution is to do it with your midfielders,
he explained.
The solution is to use midfielders like Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham to break that line and it worked.

In his first Clasico appearance against Flick's Barcelona, Mbappe had been caught in an offside position seven times, the highest tally recorded by any player in a major European league across a six-year period. This time, he was perfectly positioned to capitalise when Camavinga burst from deep beyond him.

According to the Independent, Raphinha had equalised for Barcelona in the 61st minute with an assist from Pedri, but Mbappe's 87th-minute winner, which came after Camavinga's run and cutback, proved decisive. That strike marked Mbappe's 100th goal for Real Madrid, a milestone that underscored his clinical finishing when opportunities arose.

Barcelona remain well positioned at the summit of the table and will overwhelm most opponents they face. However, if Flick harbours genuine Champions League ambitions, he must find a way to win matches against the continent's strongest teams. Inter and Atletico have eliminated them from European competition in the past two seasons, and this defeat served as a stark reminder of the work required.

Barcelona remained top on 27 points, but Madrid's victory cut their lead to just three points, with Atletico Madrid sitting second on 25 points. The gap at the summit has tightened considerably.

Julian Alvarez, a summer target for Barcelona and a scorer against them in last season's Champions League quarter-final, is instead building his future in the capital. Fresh from netting his first goal of the season in midweek, he secured the winner on Saturday with a solitary strike at home to Deportivo A Coruna. The Argentine had previously apologised to supporters for comments about making a 'dream' transfer, and Diego Simeone praised his contrition. Atletico now sit just two points adrift of Barcelona in second place.

Elsewhere in LaLiga, Valencia's troubles deepened as they lost the derby to Villarreal following a disastrous cameo from Harvey Elliott. The Englishman entered as a late substitute, received a red card for dissent, and then witnessed Georges Mikautadze score a stoppage-time winner.

Other results saw Alaves draw 1-1 with Malaga, Rayo Vallecano thrash Elche 3-0, Racing Santander edge Espanyol 2-1, Athletic Club demolish Getafe 4-0, Celta Vigo draw 0-0 with Real Betis, and Real Sociedad overcome Levante 2-1.

Bundesliga: Bayern and Dortmund set for decisive clash

Bayern Munich have navigated a difficult period away from the pitch, with head coach Vincent Kompany hospitalised due to a viral infection and captain Joshua Kimmich on compassionate leave following his father's death. These circumstances transcend football in significance.

Despite these challenges, Bayern secured a hard-fought victory away to Freiburg, who had won all five of their previous home matches this season. The result keeps Bayern level on points with Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table, setting the stage for Der Klassiker next weekend.

Dortmund maintained their challenge with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, courtesy of a brilliant late goal from Maxi Beier. However, Bayer Leverkusen lost ground after suffering a 3-0 defeat at Hoffenheim. Andrej Kramaric opened the scoring with his 18th consecutive penalty conversion in the Bundesliga, while Patrik Schick failed to score for the first time in a league match this season.

The Bundesliga's leading scorer remains Niclas Fullkrug of Werder Bremen, who netted both of his goals from the penalty spot in a 3-2 victory at Mainz to move clear of Schick at the top of the scoring charts with eight goals. West Ham and AC Milan supporters may be surprised by such prolific form, but Bremen supporters have long admired his qualities.

RB Leipzig put four past Elversberg, while Rayan Philippe scored an 88th-minute winner for Paderborn against parent-club Hamburg. Borussia Monchengladbach provided an encouraging narrative, securing a victory at Stuttgart after losing their first six games of the season.

Other results included Stuttgart losing 2-3 to Borussia Monchengladbach, Augsburg drawing 1-1 with Union Berlin, Cologne and Schalke sharing a 0-0 stalemate, and Freiburg losing 1-3 to Bayern Munich.

Serie A: Inter's remarkable resilience continues

Inter Milan have developed an almost supernatural ability to conjure victories from seemingly lost positions. Earlier in the season, they fell two goals behind in three consecutive matches and still accumulated seven points from those encounters. Last week, they conceded first to Bologna yet still prevailed. This latest comeback, however, surpassed all previous efforts.

Fiorentina held the advantage as the match entered stoppage time, yet Inter still secured victory at San Siro. Marcus Thuram equalised in the 91st minute and earned the penalty that Piotr Zielinski converted in the 98th minute to seal the win. Inter have now accumulated thirteen points from losing positions already this season.

Lazio continue to emerge as the season's defining story in Italy after producing one of their more convincing performances against Parma. They registered their highest possession total to date and, unlike in three of their previous victories, also boasted the superior expected-goals figure.

Gennaro Gattuso's side remain level on points with Inter, though with an identical record. Roma and Milan both maintained their unbeaten status. For Milan, victory came routinely as Ruben Amorim's side bounced back from their defeat to Bournemouth away to secure a win at Udinese.

Roma's situation proved far more dramatic under Gian Piero Gasperini, as they recovered from two goals down to earn a 3-3 draw in a thrilling encounter away to Napoli. Scott McTominay scored twice for the hosts for the second time in a week, but an unlikely brace from Leonardo Balerdi snatched a point for the visitors.

Atalanta and Frosinone combined for eight goals in an entertaining fixture, with the latter confounding expectations while sitting in sixth place. Juventus rediscovered some form at Lecce, while Como followed up their Manchester United victory by defeating Sassuolo.

Other results saw Torino edge Monza 3-2, Cagliari lose 0-2 to Bologna, Napoli draw 3-3 with Roma, Lazio overcome Parma 2-1, Atalanta draw 4-4 with Frosinone, Genoa defeat Venezia 1-0, Lecce lose 0-2 to Juventus, and Udinese fall 0-2 to Milan.

Ligue 1: Rennes seize opportunity as PSG prepares for Lyon

With Paris Saint-Germain hosting Lyon—the leaders entering the weekend—on Monday, other contenders had the chance to stake their claim at the summit. Monaco and Lille could only manage a draw, while Paris FC fell to defeat away at Lens.

Rennes capitalised on this opportunity, moving clear from a pack of six teams level on 14 points after a 3-0 victory over Strasbourg. Sebastian Szymanski's opening goal demonstrated composure with a smart, first-time finish, but his second—a curled effort from outside the box—displayed exceptional technique.

Further down the table, two English players produced noteworthy performances. CJ Egan-Riley scored his first goal for Marseille since joining on a free transfer from Burnley in the summer of last year, netting the opening goal in a 4-3 home victory over Le Havre.

The genuine sensation in Ligue 1 at present is Cameron Archer, who has scored his fifth goal in six appearances for Auxerre, the equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Le Mans. The on-loan Southampton striker has long possessed promise, but he is now exceeding expectations with remarkable consistency.

When measuring non-penalty goals in Ligue 1, Archer stands alone at the top of the scoring charts with five. PSG forward Ferran Torres, Monaco's Paris Brunner, and Marseille's Amine Gouiri are the only other players to have registered four so far, highlighting the quality of Archer's recent form.

Other results included Brest defeating Nice 1-2, Lens overcoming Paris FC 2-1, Monaco drawing 1-1 with Lille, Angers and Lorient sharing a 0-0 stalemate, Marseille defeating Le Havre 4-3, Rennes thrashing Strasbourg 3-0, and Toulouse drawing 0-0 with Troyes.

Elsewhere: Tolu's prolific run continues across Europe

Portuguese football resumed with Porto maintaining their perfect record at the summit of the table, securing their ninth consecutive victory. However, head coach Francesco Farioli continues to face murmurs of discontent following three defeats from three in the Champions League.

Braga's situation proved more troubling. They dispensed with head coach Carlos Vicens at the start of the week, yet their struggles persisted as they returned from Madeira pointless following a 1-0 defeat to Nacional. Benfica will play on Monday.

The Netherlands produced a drawn contest between PSV and Feyenoord, though the latter will view the point away from home more favourably, keeping them four clear of the reigning Eredivisie champions. Twente secured victory at AZ Alkmaar to leapfrog them into fourth position.

Ajax emerged as the weekend's standout performers, following up their European victory over Atalanta with a 2-1 triumph at Sparta Rotterdam in which Tolu Arokodare slotted home the second goal. The Nigerian has now registered nine goals in his last 11 matches for Ajax, a rate of productivity that Eredivisie defences have struggled to contain.

Barcelona are scheduled to host Alavés on Saturday, October 31, at 21:00 local time in LaLiga Matchday 11, offering them an opportunity to respond to their El Clasico defeat and reassert their dominance at the summit of the table.
