Carrick's defining week begins with Baleba poised to transform United's midfield struggles

The Premier League spotlight swings back to Manchester this weekend as the international break concludes, and with it comes renewed scrutiny of Michael Carrick's tenure at Old Trafford. While Manchester City have commanded media attention during the break, Manchester United's precarious league position means another poor result could trigger serious questions about whether Carrick possesses the credentials to navigate the club through this difficult period.

The next seven days, and indeed the entirety of October, represent a watershed moment for United's season. A home fixture against winless Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday is merely the opening act in a punishing schedule that includes away matches at Atletico Madrid, Leeds United and Como, before the month concludes with visits from Bournemouth and Chelsea.

Yet this demanding run also presents Carrick with a genuine opportunity to arrest United's sluggish start and build momentum. The head coach has cited a sequence of unfortunate circumstances as contributing factors to the club's slow beginning, but such explanations will carry diminishing weight as this next phase unfolds.

Carrick has largely sidestepped detailed discussion of his team's underperformance during his public appearances, though he will be hoping the international break has provided genuine benefit to his squad. Players have had the chance to work on their form, address fitness concerns and rebuild confidence after a frustrating opening month.

Matheus Cunha exemplifies this potential reset. The Brazilian has appeared somewhat out of sorts this season, a situation potentially exacerbated by his deployment through the middle rather than in his preferred left-wing role. With Brazil opting not to call him up for international duty, Cunha has enjoyed uninterrupted time to recover from a disappointing start to the campaign.

The arrival of Amad Diallo back to full fitness opens fresh tactical possibilities for Carrick's attack. With Amad available on the right flank, Bryan Mbeumo can shift into a central attacking position, while Cunha could engage in an intriguing competition with Marcus Rashford, subject to the latter's fitness status, for the left-wing berth.

Carrick's attacking options have been severely constrained thus far, partly owing to Benjamin Sesko's limited availability, but he now possesses the personnel to reshape his team's attacking profile should he choose to do so.

Friday's pre-match press conference promises to be particularly revealing. Beyond Carrick's reflections on Manchester City's dominance and his personal perspective as a former City player, the team news ahead of Saturday's encounter with Spurs will prove crucial. While Carrick typically guards information closely in such settings, the mounting concerns surrounding his squad composition mean his disclosure of available options will be closely watched.

Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu both withdrew from their respective international squads due to injury, while Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo pulled out of England duty, and Benjamin Sesko did likewise with Slovenia. Yet United will have reinforcements available.

Amad's return has already been confirmed. Matthijs de Ligt continues his progression towards full match fitness, but perhaps most significantly, summer signing Carlos Baleba is on the verge of making his competitive debut. The midfielder has recovered from an ankle injury sustained during Brighton's pre-season preparations and has utilised the international break to acclimatise to his new surroundings at Carrington.

According to reports from the international break, Baleba and de Ligt featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Lausanne-Sport, with Baleba making his United debut in a 2–1 victory. The midfielder has settled well among staff and players and completed his initial broadcast commitments as a United player earlier this week alongside Amad, suggesting he is ready to feature whenever Carrick deems appropriate.

The circumstances surrounding Baleba's arrival could have unfolded very differently had United enjoyed a more positive start. Under normal circumstances, a £65m signing might have been introduced gradually into the team's rhythm. However, given United's five-point haul from five games, Baleba's significance to the midfield's development has intensified considerably.

According to current league standings, United sit 12th with five points, while Tottenham occupy 20th place with just two points. The pairing of Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo has demonstrated Carrick's pre-season thinking, and it appears a sound combination for specific matches and circumstances, particularly at home when United can control possession and dictate tempo. Yet consistency remains elusive.

Baleba will inject qualities into this midfield that have remained absent since Casemiro's summer departure. Beyond his physical presence, he offers something United has lacked at both ends of the pitch. Defensively, he can provide the shield a backline has desperately needed, particularly when United are exposed during transitions—a recurring vulnerability this season.

More intriguingly, his attacking contributions could prove equally transformative. During his most impressive periods at Brighton, Baleba consistently impressed with his range of passing and his capacity to drive forward with the ball through midfield. These are precisely the qualities United's midfield has largely lacked for years, perhaps since Paul Pogba's departure.

While it remains premature to label Baleba as a transformative figure, his arrival addresses a specific and pressing need. For what Carrick and his side require, particularly given the fixture congestion ahead, Baleba could emerge as United's most consequential summer acquisition.

The fixture list offers no respite. United are scheduled to host Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 10, at 5:30 p.m. UK time, before embarking on their continental and domestic travels. How Carrick manages this period, and whether Baleba can deliver the midfield stability and progression United desperately require, will define whether this week marks a genuine turning point or merely another false dawn in a season already threatening to slip away.
