Benjamin Sesko on track for Premier League return
Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko is on course to be fit before the Premier League season starts despite missing successive pre-season friendlies.
The Slovenian has been struggling with a shin injury and that meant he was absent for games against Wrexham and Rosenborg as he continues to follow a rehabilitation program.
Sesko was already nursing a shin injury that he aggravated in the win over Liverpool in early May.
United kept their cards close to their chest regarding the extent of the injury at the time as the striker missed the last three games of the campaign having been a regular up until then.
However, The Sun reports that Sesko’s recovery is going to plan and he was never scheduled to participate in their opening two friendlies.
The ex-RB Leipzig man began outdoor training last week and has a chance of being involved against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on Saturday as he bids to build on what was an impressive debut season, despite a slow start leading to some doubts over his signing.
Sesko's role in United's summer schedule
Sesko is likely to start against PSG in Gothenburg on August 8 before the entire United squad fly from Sweden to Dublin for a six-day training camp.
The Red Devils play Leeds at Croke Park on August 12.
United begin their Premier League season against Hull City on August 22 as Michael Carrick prepares for his first full season in charge following a stellar spell in the dugout as an interim, with his results ultimately landing him the job permanently.
Sesko's goals proved crucial to their run of 12 wins in 17 games.
The Slovenian became a super sub in Carrick's early days, coming off the bench to score the winner against Fulham and then Everton a few weeks later.
In between that he scored a stoppage-time leveller at West Ham.
Sesko also scored crucial goals in wins over Crystal Palace, Brentford and Liverpool as he ended his debut campaign with 12 goals.
Zirkzee benefits as United weigh up a sale
His injury absence has allowed Joshua Zirkzee to start in the recently friendlies, despite United’s preference to sell him.
The Dutchman was signed by Erik ten Hag but has struggled to live up to expectations and is very much a squad player.
Zirkzee is linked with a return to Italy, but the club need to find a buyer at the right price.
