According to Sky Sports, pundit Paul Merson has declared that Brighton will become genuine Premier League title contenders if they can navigate back-to-back fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester City with two victories.
The Seagulls occupy third position in the standings, trailing only Manchester City and Arsenal, having secured victories in each of their last four league outings. Following a dominant 5–0 demolition of Crystal Palace on October 18, Brighton extended their winning streak with an impressive display that represented the widest-margin result of Premier League matchday seven.
Brighton's next challenge arrives when they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on October 25 at 14:00, with the match broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League on Super Sunday. The Seagulls have endured a difficult record at that venue, failing to secure a win in their last six visits across all competitions. However, they encounter a Liverpool side that has yet to record a league victory at home this season.
The fixture carries particular significance given the contrasting form of both teams.
Liverpool are not playing really well. They are not setting the world alight at the moment. But it will be headline news if they get beaten by Brighton,Merson observed.
Three days after the Anfield encounter, Brighton face Manchester City at the Etihad on October 31. Notably, the two clubs will meet twice in quick succession, with a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie scheduled for October 28 at 19:30, followed by the league fixture on October 31 at 15:00.
Merson's assessment of Brighton's prospects hinges entirely on the outcome of these two pivotal matches.
That is it in a nutshell: we'll see where they are after the next two games,he said.
If they go and win their next two games, I don't care how long has gone in the season, they are one million per cent title contenders. Then it's a different game. Then they are going to places expecting to win.
The Sky Sports analyst acknowledged the psychological dimension of competing against established heavyweights.
And Brighton, at the moment, you would probably say are a better team than Liverpool. But it's the big team mentality. The pressure's different.
Merson emphasised the importance of winning rather than merely avoiding defeat.
If Brighton go and get beaten by those two teams, no one will say a word. If they drew both, that would be amazing, but you'd rather win one and lose one. It's funny how people look at it and think the two draws would look better because they haven't lost. You've got to win football matches.
He expressed confidence in Brighton's current trajectory and playing style.
At the moment, you're looking and thinking they shouldn't get beaten in those two games, the way they are playing.
Merson offered particular praise for the manner in which Brighton operate on the pitch.
I like what Brighton are doing. I think they've been outstanding. I watched them against Arsenal. They close you down, they play at a tempo, they suffocate you. It doesn't matter how good a footballer you are, if you get people's heads down, they can't do anything. It's as simple as that.
He concluded by suggesting that the top sides would prefer to avoid Brighton in their current form.
They've got a lot of games coming up, but they're good testers. If I'm Man City and Liverpool, I don't really want to be playing Brighton.
Carragher's glowing assessment
Fellow Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has offered similarly enthusiastic commentary on Brighton's performance this season, though he stopped short of endorsing Merson's title contention claim.
Right now, they are the story of the season. I just love the way they play,Carragher said.
They remind me a little bit of watching a Jurgen Klopp Liverpool team; really aggressive, really fast, really direct.
Carragher drew explicit parallels between Brighton's current approach and the high-intensity football that defined Klopp's most successful Liverpool campaigns.
If you're asking me or most football fans to describe how you want your team to play, how you'd like to watch them, I think it's that. It's fast, aggressive, direct football. All-action with quality.
Klopp's Liverpool team are one of the greatest teams we've seen in the Premier League era and this team right now are posting similar sorts of numbers in terms of goals scored and all those metrics we used to look at with Klopp,he added.
On Monday Night Football, Carragher elaborated on the stylistic evolution under manager Fabian Hürzeler.
I think the style of football Brighton play now is better [than what they played under De Zerbi] or certainly something I'd want to watch more.
The best way to describe the football is aggressive, forward, vertical, intensity. He continued:
It reminds me of the debates we used to have about Klopp and Pep Guardiola. Two very successful managers, great managers, great teams, but I think most people in this country would almost plump for a Jurgen Klopp style of football, and that's what I think we're watching here.
However, Carragher offered a more cautious outlook regarding Brighton's title ambitions.
I'm not sure about title contenders, but I do look at them and think they are where they should be. It's not the case they've had a bit of fortune; they thoroughly deserve to be where they [are],he stated.
Champions League the realistic target
Rather than the Premier League crown, Carragher identified Champions League qualification as the appropriate benchmark for Brighton's season.
It's very early in the season, but watching them play this early, I think they should be disappointed if they don't make the Champions League, especially if it goes down to fifth.
They've got to be looking to be around fifth or sixth, maybe even better with the way they've started the season.
Carragher highlighted the vulnerability of traditional top-six contenders as a factor working in Brighton's favour.
There are a lot of question marks about a lot of teams this season: Liverpool being one, Aston Villa another, Man Utd, Tottenham. Teams you would associate with being around the Champions League positions are not at their absolute best, so I think there's a great opportunity for Brighton to get Champions League football.
Brighton's current league position reflects their strong start to the campaign. After seven league matches, Brighton had accumulated 16 points with a +18 goal difference, positioning them third in the table. Manchester City led the standings with 21 points, whilst Liverpool occupied eighth place with 12 points, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the season so far.
Brighton's recent form has been exceptional. Beyond their league victories, the club's October 22 Conference League match against Jablonec ended in a goalless draw, demonstrating their ability to compete across multiple competitions whilst maintaining their domestic momentum.
Upcoming fixtures
Brighton face a crucial period ahead. The visit to Anfield on October 25 represents their first major test against a traditional heavyweight, followed immediately by the Carabao Cup encounter with Manchester City on October 28 and the league fixture at the Etihad on October 31. These three matches in eight days will provide a comprehensive examination of their credentials and may well determine whether Merson's bold prediction of title contention comes to fruition.
