Queens Park Rangers dominated possession and territory against Bolton Wanderers at Loftus Road but were unable to convert their dominance into victory, settling for a goalless stalemate that will feel like a missed opportunity for the hosts.
Richard Kone, recalled to the Rangers starting eleven after being left out of last weekend's triumph at Portsmouth, endured a difficult afternoon in front of goal. The striker squandered four clear-cut opportunities during a first half in which QPR controlled proceedings, leaving the home side to rue what many will view as two points surrendered.
Kone's first chance arrived when Ilias Chair provided the assist, but his effort lacked conviction and was comfortably gathered by Bolton goalkeeper Jack Bonham. Minutes later, following incisive work down the left flank by Koki Saito, Kone found himself in a promising position at close range, only for Bonham to make another crucial save.
The striker's third opportunity came courtesy of a through ball from Harvey Vale, presenting him with a one-on-one situation that he failed to capitalise on. Bonham, operating at the peak of his powers throughout the opening period, also repelled an early effort from Vale himself. When Ronnie Edwards pulled the ball back from the right-hand touchline after Bolton's defence failed to clear their lines, Kone once again could not find the target.
QPR's pressure continued unabated after the interval. The hosts appealed vehemently for a penalty when Koki Saito, having evaded two defenders with clever footwork, was brought down by Josh Sheehan, but the referee waved away their protests.
Chances continued to arrive for the home side. Kone nodded the ball towards Vale, whose header went straight at Bonham. Just after the hour mark, a low cross from the right by Amadou Mbengue found Kone, but Bonham was equal to the task once more.
The succession of missed opportunities prompted Rangers head coach Julien Stephan to make sweeping changes. Kone was withdrawn in favour of Rumarn Burrell, while fit-again midfielder Nicolas Madsen returned to the pitch. Recent signings Tariq Lamptey and Dennis Cirkin, making their debuts for the club, were also introduced to inject fresh impetus into the attack.
Despite maintaining their stranglehold on possession and territory, QPR struggled to manufacture clear-cut openings after the substitutions. Bonham was called upon once more in stoppage time, spreading himself to deny Paul Smyth at point-blank range. Smyth threatened again moments later, cutting in from the left before being thwarted by a well-timed challenge from Lewis Brunt.
Bolton, who secured victory against Preston in their previous outing, will view their point as a valuable one given the relentless pressure they faced. The newly promoted side rode their luck at times and could realistically have found themselves several goals adrift by the interval, yet they demonstrated resilience and remained a threat on the counter-attack throughout.
The result leaves both sides with four points from their opening two matches of the season. For Bolton, the draw represents an encouraging foundation in the Championship. For QPR, however, the inability to build on their opening-day success at Portsmouth will be a source of considerable frustration.
What comes next
According to ESPN's fixture list, QPR's next Championship encounter is scheduled for Saturday 29 August 2026, when they travel to Blackburn Rovers. The fixture against Bolton on 22 August 2026 had been listed as QPR's first home league match of the season, and BBC Sport had highlighted the date as a key fixture in the campaign calendar.
