Spurs Women boss Ho warns of bumpy road ahead despite impressive start

Spurs Women boss Martin Ho insists long-term success requires accepting ups and downs, not linear progress. After opening wins over Palace and Villa, a 6-1 loss to London City Lionesses proved humbling before Chelsea and Arsenal fixtures.

Spurs Women boss Ho warns of bumpy road ahead despite impressive start

Rarely do sporting achievements materialise without considerable struggle. Whether pursuing league titles or securing top-three finishes, each WSL campaign grows increasingly unpredictable—and Tottenham stands among numerous clubs harbouring ambitions of silverware.

Tottenham opened the 2026/27 season impressively, dismantling Crystal Palace and Aston Villa in successive matches with a combined scoreline of 11-0. However, that momentum evaporated swiftly when London City Lionesses inflicted a 6-1 reverse on the north London side before the international window.

The heavy defeat served as a sobering reality check for manager Martin Ho and his squad regarding the challenge of securing Champions League qualification this term. The fixture list offers no respite either, with Chelsea and Arsenal looming in consecutive matches, beginning with a trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Ho, characteristically measured in his assessment, will have absorbed the lesson thoroughly. Under the former Brann manager's stewardship, Spurs have transformed from relegation-form performers into European contenders within eighteen months, yet the pathway to the summit demands resilience and acceptance of volatility.

In an exclusive conversation with Sky Sports, Ho articulated his philosophy:

You're always optimistic that it can go well, but I'm also realistic that you don't just have this long-term success. It's not linear, there's going to be ups and downs, but I know if you want long-term consistency, you're going to have to have this.

He continued:

We can't just go from being a team that's been fighting at the bottom of the table to go and challenge for the [WSL] trophy and make that successful and consistent over years to come. There's a process to that but the ambition is always to be at the top of that table.

Raising Standards and Building Culture

Since his appointment, Ho has prioritised elevating expectations across the organisation.

Since coming in, I've tried to push standards, push the expectation with staff and players to give us a platform that can give us an opportunity to progress.

The squad has responded positively to this demanding approach.

The players deserve a lot of credit for that because they take the information and run with it. They play with courage, bravery, with personality which is what I asked for and their commitment and willingness is first class.

Ho acknowledged surprise at the speed of transformation.

Maybe there were times early on when I thought it was going to take a lot longer to get to where we want to be identity-wise, but the players deserve the credit because they've enabled us to maybe accelerate a little bit quicker than what I probably thought.

Strategic Summer Recruitment

Much of Spurs' progress stems from astute recruitment during the summer window. The club secured Champions League-winning midfielder Victoria Pelova from Arsenal, alongside Lyon's Alice Sombath and Wolfsburg's Caitlin Dijkstra among other notable arrivals.

These signings reflected Ho's deliberate strategy of importing experience from multiple competitive environments.

We felt like we needed certain qualities in certain positions and those players that have come in have allowed us to do that. They've also been in environments where they've been competing in different ways, they'll bring those experiences here which was important for us that we have a diverse environment and culture.

Balance between youth and experience formed another cornerstone of the recruitment approach.

You also want to make sure you get a balance also between the youth and experience of the squad. You want to get a balance of where you feel relationships can be built and where they can be long-term on the pitch.

Sombath's arrival exemplified this philosophy.

Alice [Sombath] was one of those in that position where she's had such wonderful experiences at Lyon of winning titles, but also internationally, she's got really good credibility at such a young age. The opportunity to bring her in was huge for us and someone we have followed for a while.

Pelova's transfer carried particular significance given her circumstances.

Then people like Victoria [Pelova], who's coming off the back of a long-term injury. She was maybe low of confidence and wasn't in a place where she felt her football could go forward. The opportunity to bring her here after having those conversations was important.

Pelova has flourished since joining, currently sharing the WSL's top-scoring position with five goals alongside Manchester City's Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw and Birmingham's Oceane Hurtre.

Ho elaborated on Pelova's impact:

She's been part of a winning culture and a winning environment and those environments are what we want to bring to the club, which she can share and we can lean on those experiences from her. But since she's come in, she's been outstanding in terms of giving her the enthusiasm again to play football, but giving her the confidence and belief she can achieve what she wants in terms of own ambitions.

Immediate Tests Against London Rivals

According to Chelsea's official website, the Blues entered the matchweek second in the WSL standings, two points clear of Tottenham who occupied fourth position after five league matches. Chelsea remained unbeaten across three consecutive home league fixtures, whilst Spurs had similarly gone three away matches without defeat.

Tottenham's record showed 10 points accumulated from five league games, with 16 goals scored and eight conceded, demonstrating both attacking prowess and defensive vulnerabilities.

The Sunday encounter at Stamford Bridge represents a crucial examination of Spurs' credentials against elite opposition. Ho acknowledged the significance:

You have to show a willingness to compete in those games first. You go in with the mindset and the objective is always to win the game, but we have to look at the process behind that first and the performance has to allow you to be in that position psychologically.

He continued:

Are they going to be tough games? 100 percent, but they're the games you want to play and I want to play in as a coach, the players want to play in. The commercial interest is big in those because they're London derbies so you have to embrace them as a player.

Such fixtures reveal character and development.

But they're the ones where you will really see the character and belief of the group, they're the ones where you'll really see the development and the progress of the team, but one game doesn't tell you if you're a good team or a bad team.

Ho stressed the importance of perspective:

It maybe gives you some answers in terms of where we need to go and the direction we need to go in, but it doesn't define you.

The Arsenal Fixture and Season Trajectory

Following the Chelsea encounter, Spurs face Arsenal in the north London derby on October 25 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This venue represents Spurs' sole victory against the Gunners across all competitions, and with Arsenal experiencing their own difficult campaign start, the opportunity for another positive result exists.

The consecutive fixtures against Chelsea and Arsenal will substantially influence where Spurs finish when the season concludes in May. After the deflating loss to London City Lionesses, Ho's side must demonstrate resilience and quality against the capital's strongest opponents.

What Happens Next

Tottenham travel to Chelsea on Sunday, October 18, with kick-off scheduled for noon UK time, broadcast live on Sky Sports Football and Mix from 11am. The north London derby against Arsenal follows on October 25 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Free in-game clips and match highlights will be available shortly after full-time on Sky Sports' digital platforms. Supporters can also enter Sky Sports' Super 6 competition for a chance to win £1 million.
