Cristian Romero linked with Arsenal and Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero is on Arsenal and Chelsea's transfer radar. This claim has been made by Italian media, after Romero was reportedly offered to Inter Milan.

The 28-year-old is expected to depart this summer, after finding himself in the firing line of Spurs fans toward the end of the season. His decision to fly back to Argentina for medical treatment on a knee injury did not go down well with the north Londoners' fans, particularly when it was claimed he would be absent for their win or relegation final Premier League clash against Everton. Thinking better of the situation, Romero did fly back to see his team-mates save their skin against the Toffees, but after Spurs brought in Jan Paul van Hecke and Marco Senesi his future is looking uncertain.

While Inter emerged as early contenders for his signature, Italian outlets understand they may have to battle Chelsea and Arsenal to sign him.

Corriere dello Sport claims that both Mikel Arteta and Xabi Alonso's sides are among those vying for the former Atalanta defender. The Gunners are actively seeking reinforcements at centre-back, with William Saliba set to miss a significant chunk of the season after undergoing back surgery.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are poised to confirm the capture of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, yet are also thought to be pursuing an additional centre-half. Free agent John Stones, who departed Manchester City at the end of last season, has similarly been linked with both clubs.

It would be an intriguing development if either Arsenal or Chelsea secured a deal for Romero.

Mundo Deportivo have suggested that Spurs are seeking approximately £25.9m despite previously placing his value at around £60.3m. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have also been linked with interest in Romero this summer. Spurs rejected an approach from the former last season when they made enquiries about his availability.

Despite his change of heart, Romero's future at the club still appears destined to conclude this summer, one way or another.

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilo also virtually confirmed they are keen on signing him. He told Sky Sport Italy.

"It's definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club (Tottenham). These things take some time but there's definitely interest. Let's see."
