Curtis Jones has moved to Inter Milan

Inter Milan have officially confirmed the acquisition of Curtis Jones following a £30m (€35m) transfer from Liverpool, bringing to an end a 16-year association between the midfielder and the Reds.

According to Sky Sports News, the structure of the deal comprises an initial €30m plus up to €5m in performance-based add-ons, with a 10 per cent sell-on clause embedded in the agreement.

The 25-year-old midfielder had entered the final year of his Liverpool contract, a situation that accelerated negotiations throughout the summer window. Inter had previously attempted to sign Jones in January 2026, but the Merseyside club rejected those initial approaches before eventually reaching a settlement on terms.

Jones joined Liverpool at the age of nine and progressed through the club's academy system before making his first-team debut during the 2018/19 season. Over his time at Anfield, the England international made 228 competitive appearances and contributed 22 goals to the club's cause.

His trophy cabinet at Liverpool is substantial, featuring two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, the Club World Cup and the FA Cup. He also featured in the 2022 Champions League final, where the Reds finished as runners-up to Real Madrid.

The move to the San Siro represents the third England international to join Inter during this transfer window. John Stones and Djed Spence have also completed switches to Cristian Chivu's squad, signalling a notable influx of Premier League experience into the Italian club.

Liverpool's midfield reshuffled under Iraola

Curtis Jones' departure leaves new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola with significant decisions to make regarding his midfield composition. Under previous head coach Arne Slot, Jones featured in 49 matches, with 34 of those appearances coming in the Premier League campaign as Liverpool challenged for the title.

During that period, Jones shared midfield responsibilities with Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch, while also being deployed as a makeshift right-back on several occasions.

Iraola has signalled his intention to deploy Florian Wirtz in an advanced No 10 position within a 4-2-3-1 formation going forward. This tactical approach means Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Gravenberch will compete for two central midfield spots in front of the back four.

The Basque manager also has Wataru Endo and academy prospect Trey Nyoni available for selection, with the latter having impressed during pre-season preparations. Liverpool have not ruled out reinvesting the £30m received from Inter into a midfield replacement, though the club valued Jones at £35m earlier in the summer, which had influenced Inter's negotiating position throughout the pursuit.

What comes next

Jones was scheduled to undergo his medical examination in Milan on 22 August 2026, with official confirmation of the transfer expected to follow shortly after the completion of those formalities. The midfielder is anticipated to sign a five-year contract with the Italian side, cementing his long-term commitment to the club.
