Villa comeback plan faces a new hurdle
Jack Grealish's dream Aston Villa homecoming could be off the cards following the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. The left winger agreed a season-long loan in Birmingham with an obligation to buy clause set for next summer.
Garnacho arrived at Villa Park following the Blues' acquisition of Morgan Rogers for a record £117million fee. While these transfers represent positive reinforcements for both clubs, it could also spell disaster for Grealish.
The England international joined City for £100m in 2021, signing a six-year deal. During his time at the Etihad, Grealish has secured three Premier League titles and the Champions League.
However, his time on the pitch diminished rapidly and he sought a loan move after being left out of Pep Guardiola's plans. Grealish joined Everton for the 2025/26 campaign and regained his old form with six assists in 22 games.

But a stress fracture in his foot killed his momentum and left him sidelined. The 30-year-old now has a decision to make: whether he tries to find a way under Enzo Maresca or move on to pastures new.
Why a Villa return made sense
A return to Villa could've been the dream for the boyhood fan, who joined the club aged six and became one of their modern heroes. Grealish appeared 213 times in claret and blue, making 75 goal contributions and leading them back to the Premier League as captain in 2019.

The money from his transfer to City helped stabilise Villa and Grealish shared his die-hard love with one clear message. He said:
I'll always be a Villa fan. I love this club with all my heart and I hope you understand my reasons for seeking a new challenge. The club are in great hands, the manager, the lads, the new signings coming in. It's an exciting time to be a Villa fan. I'll see you all again soon. Until next time. UTV.
A return for the winger looks like a no-brainer for both parties, with former teammate Robert Snodgrass telling OLBG that the club simply have to think 'why not.' He said:
Listen, it is certainly possible that there might be a few openings available at Villa, as they may be looking to bolster their ranks. You just never know what a club like that might be planning.
When you look at the overall situation, I think Jack would absolutely love a return to that environment. It's well-documented that he is a die-hard Villa fan who is incredibly passionate about that club, so if the chance arose, you really have to think why not?

Now, this transfer has become more difficult following Garnacho's arrival in Birmingham. The 22-year-old will provide cover in Grealish's natural position while also having age and speed on his side.
The left winger is eight years Garnacho's senior and has struggled with injury in recent seasons.
