Carrick still wants another midfielder at Man Utd
Michael Carrick remains determined to sign ANOTHER midfielder for Manchester United this summer. The Red Devils have already added to their options in the heart of the pitch over the past few weeks.
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have arrived for a combined £85m from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively. But it appears that Carrick is not totally satisfied yet.
According to The Guardian, the United boss is still intent on signing a third midfielder to add to his options even further following the departuer of Casemiro. It remains to be seen who that man will be but it is unlikely to be be Atlanta’s Ederson. The Red Devils had agreed a deal for the Brazilian, only to pull the plug on a move.
Defensive reinforcements also on the agenda
Away from midfield, United are also keen on adding to their defensive options, with a left-back a priority. Tyrell Malacia left the club at the end of his contract at the end of last season, leaving United needing more back-up.
A couple of Premier League options have already been identified ahead of a potential move. Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Fulham star Antonee Robinson are among those.
Hall has impressed at St James’ Park since his move from Chelsea. But having lost Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon this summer, Newcastle will not be keen on selling another key player. He remains under contract until 2029.
Robinson in the meantime has shone for Fulham over recent campaigns but being 29, is slightly older than United’s preferred profile.
Carrick reflects on pre-season start
Speaking after United’s opening pre-season defeat against Wrexham, Carrick was full of his praise for one of his summer arrivals.
“There’s loads of little positives to take from the game. I thought Andrey and Mason [Mount] did some really good things and connected really well. I could see some positives there. "[At the] top end of the pitch, just because it is a week in, those sharp little movements and bright moments that you are looking for, they come as you progress through the weeks of training. That is what it is. There were good signs from Andrey on his first one, he’s getting in the rhythm and feel of it again, so it was good to see him in a red shirt.”
Carrick added:
“As I said before the game, the boys have only been back together for 10 days or so. It was just about getting through today, looking for some positives, looking for some good things and knowing that it wasn’t going to be perfect. "That is only natural for the first one. I think the most important thing is that everyone came through it in good shape. No injuries, so we can move on and take the next step next week.”
