Arsenal's £75m swoop for Bruno Guimaraes makes plenty of sense on paper. The now former Newcastle captain ranks among the Premier League's most rounded midfielders, someone equally capable of breaking up opposition attacks as he is of scoring goals and threading passes, all backed by a physical presence few can match.
The 28-year-old's arrival swells an already crowded engine room at the Emirates, joining Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis-Skelly. The obvious question now facing Mikel Arteta is exactly where Guimaraes slots into that picture.
Number 6 or number 8?
Guimaraes has operated both as a holding midfielder and as a more progressive No 8 during his career. Speaking to Sky Sports back in October 2022, while Eddie Howe was using him in the deeper role at Newcastle, he made clear which position he actually favoured.
"To be honest, if you ask me this question, I have to say I prefer to play at No 8, but I think my role here, at No 6, is exactly what the team needs," said Guimaraes. "It is to take the ball out, to do some passes, to find the wingers and the strikers.
"I can play both positions, but Eddie has a choice to make and, for me, the most important thing is just to play and to help Newcastle get the three points. I think my best position is at No 8 but I can play at No 6. It's not a problem for me."
He eventually got his wish once Sandro Tonali arrived to take up the No 6 berth at Newcastle, allowing Guimaraes to push forward into his preferred role. That adaptability, paired with an evident readiness to prioritise the team over personal preference, is precisely the sort of trait Arteta values in players capable of covering multiple positions.
A breakdown of his Premier League minutes by position tells the story of that versatility clearly. While the majority of his time on the pitch for Newcastle came at the base of midfield, he has also featured as both a right-sided and left-sided No 8, evidence of just how flexibly Arsenal could deploy him.
Arsenal have already signalled their intentions in this regard. Sporting director Andrea Berta explained that Guimaraes was brought in partly to help evolve the way the squad plays, while also sharpening internal competition for places under Arteta.
"As we have all seen, Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player. He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year," Berta said.
"Bruno will allow Mikel to further develop our playing style and will also increase our internal competitiveness, which is essential for maintaining the standards required when we are aiming to win major trophies."

The tactical options he unlocks
Guimaraes has referred to himself as a "warrior" on the pitch, though one who brings genuine quality on the ball too. "I'm good with the ball, composed, very calm," he said after completing his move.
Even while nominally holding down the No 6 spot for Newcastle, he was regularly given licence to get forward. "With the way we are playing, Dan Burn is at left-back, so he can stay in the middle and I can go and be another player to help the attackers," he told Sky Sports back in 2022.
The numbers back up that attacking instinct. In his first season operating as the No 6, Guimaraes still managed four goals and five assists in the Premier League for Newcastle. He improved on that the following campaign, contributing seven goals and eight assists from the same position.
Across his time on Tyneside, he racked up 30 goals and 25 assists in 153 Premier League appearances for the club, a return that highlights just how much of an attacking outlet he can be even from deeper positions.
Arsenal possess several full-backs comfortable tucking into midfield, which would free Guimaraes to surge forward from the base of the team if used as a No 6. Alternatively, Arteta could get the best of his box-to-box qualities by pairing him in a double pivot.
Rice looks the natural partner for that system. Last season the 27-year-old spent much of his time as Arsenal's left-sided No 8 alongside Zubimendi at No 6, before finishing the campaign further back as part of a double pivot on the right, playing next to a Lewis-Skelly who had impressed following his late switch into midfield.
That partnership worked well, with Rice showing the same tireless box-to-box running that defines Guimaraes' game, while also offering tactical discipline and positional awareness. Even before his own move into a double pivot, Rice frequently covered for Zubimendi, who still managed five Premier League goals playing as the No 6.
Deploying Guimaraes and Rice together as a pivot would free Arteta to play either Odegaard or Eberechi Eze purely as a No 10. Should Rice be missing through injury or rotation, both he and Guimaraes could instead operate as No 8s ahead of a deeper-lying partner.
Should Arteta instead want to prioritise power and physicality over creative flair, he could drop a playmaker, install Zubimendi at the base and push Guimaraes into the right-sided No 8 role he occupied for large parts of his final two seasons at Newcastle.
A midfield trio of Guimaraes, Zubimendi and Rice would not scream attacking intent, but it would give Arsenal serious control in the physical battles of central midfield. Interestingly, Guimaraes' passing numbers actually compare closely to Odegaard's.
Last season he completed almost the same number of line-breaking passes per 90 minutes as Arsenal's captain, averaging 8.6 - comfortably ahead of both Rice and Zubimendi. He also directed a similar proportion of passes forward compared to Odegaard, and was in fact more accurate when doing so.
Those figures point to a genuine ability to pick apart opposition defences, something that could help soften the blow of any Odegaard absence while adding a further creative dimension from deeper areas of the pitch.
Who might miss out?
Guimaraes' arrival naturally raises questions over what it means for Arsenal's existing midfield options, even if the logic behind pursuing a player of his calibre is obvious.
Last season's minutes were skewed heavily towards Rice and Zubimendi, both of whom logged more than 4,000 minutes and would benefit from a reduced workload this time around.
That reliance stemmed partly from injuries - Odegaard, Merino and midfield-capable Kai Havertz all had extended spells out - but also reflected Arteta's reluctance to trust alternatives such as Christian Norgaard, who has since departed for Everton.
Norgaard's exit created room in the squad that Guimaraes has now filled, though Arsenal may still need to trim numbers further given Ethan Nwaneri and Fabio Vieira have both returned from loan spells at Marseille and Hamburg respectively last season.
Lewis-Skelly, who ended last season starting in midfield ahead of Zubimendi, could find himself further down the pecking order as a result. But with Arsenal having played 63 games last term and chasing trophies on several fronts again, the scale of rotation required - plus the inevitability of injuries - should still leave openings for the teenager in midfield.
Whatever configuration Arteta settles on, one thing looks certain: Guimaraes, valued by Newcastle at £80m, has not been signed to sit on the periphery.

The move caps a fast-moving few weeks of transfer business. Arsenal and Newcastle had reportedly reached a total agreement for Guimaraes as of 4 August 2026, according to The Athletic, with a separate report from Striver Football stating the deal was close to completion and the Brazilian was expected to join for £75million.
That reporting tallies with Sky Sports' own coverage of the saga, which had earlier detailed how Arsenal intensified talks with Newcastle over personal terms, three verbal proposals and a possible £70million bid, before an opening offer was rejected as the midfielder travelled to La Manga for discussions with Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle. Sky Sports also reported that Arsenal were set to agree the blockbuster deal with the fee to be paid in full up front, and had even floated the possibility of lining up alongside a potential Vinicius Junior arrival as part of a wider summer overhaul of Arteta's title-winning squad.
Guimaraes originally joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 for a reported £40m, and was handed the captaincy in 2024, underlining just how significant a departure this represents for the Magpies according to the BBC. As far back as 8 July 2026, The Athletic had already reported that Arsenal were considering Guimaraes as a possible alternative to Martin Zubimendi in central midfield, a link that has now come to fruition in rather different terms than first suggested, via The Athletic.
Where the analysts think he fits
Outside assessments of the move broadly echo the idea that Guimaraes' long-term future lies further up the pitch than the pure No 6 role. ESPN has described him as better suited to a box-to-box No 8 role than to a strictly defensive midfield job based on his performances over the past year.
The Analyst went further, suggesting his most natural fit at Arsenal would be as one of two No 8s in a 4-3-3, sharing defensive responsibilities with Declan Rice, according to The Analyst. A separate tactical preview from Yahoo Sports predicted Arsenal would likely shift towards a 4-3-3 box-midfield system, with Zubimendi anchoring the base and Rice and Guimaraes both operating as No 8s ahead of him.
Not every analysis points the same way, though. Striver Football's own breakdown suggested Guimaraes could equally function as a lone pivot, whether in a straightforward two-man midfield or as the deepest of a three, according to Striver Football - a reminder of just how many permutations Arteta now has at his disposal.
What happens next
Arsenal's Premier League title defence is scheduled to begin against Coventry City on 21 August 2026, according to Striver Football, which will give Arteta his first competitive opportunity to trial whichever midfield configuration he settles on featuring his new £75m signing.
