Formula 1 arrives in Mexico City this weekend with Kimi Antonelli poised to make history. According to Sky Sports, the 20-year-old Mercedes driver could become the sport's youngest world champion after his commanding performance at Austin.

Antonelli's victory in Texas has positioned him within touching distance of the title. A top-nine finish at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez would be enough to secure the Drivers' Championship, as would failures by George Russell and Lewis Hamilton to win the race. Mercedes also harbour ambitions of wrapping up the Constructors' Championship, though they would need to outscore Ferrari by 39 points to achieve that feat.

The championship narrative will dominate the weekend, but the battle for supremacy remains competitive. Lando Norris claimed victory at this venue last year, though McLaren's recent form has deteriorated significantly. The Woking team has endured a difficult stretch, with Red Bull and Ferrari emerging as Mercedes' primary challengers. McLaren has gone four races without a podium since Norris missed victory in Madrid, with Norris finishing fifth and Oscar Piastri seventh in Austin. The team has indicated that further upgrades are planned for Brazil and Las Vegas, with little new hardware expected in Mexico.

Max Verstappen arrives as a formidable force at this circuit, having won at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez a record five times. However, all attention will centre on whether Antonelli can clinch the title in style. Ten drivers, including Verstappen, Norris and Russell, will sit out first practice as their teams meet rookie-driver running requirements, with replacements including Ayumu Iwasa for Verstappen, Leonardo Fornaroli for Norris and Frederik Vesti for Russell.

Sergio Pérez's return to Mexico City with Cadillac has generated considerable local excitement, with more than 100,000 fans lining Paseo de la Reforma for his homecoming, according to event organisers.

Understanding the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez

The circuit sits 2,200 metres above sea level, creating thin air that seriously tests the power units. The altitude reduces downforce significantly, forcing teams to adopt Monaco-level downforce configurations to maintain strong corner performance. This is particularly crucial in the high-speed middle sector and the slow final sector, which winds through an old baseball stadium.

Overtaking opportunities exist thanks to long straights leading into Turn 1 and Turn 4, where drivers have shown willingness to engage in close racing. The 2024 encounter between Verstappen and Norris demonstrated the potential for wheel-to-wheel action at these points.

Weather forecast for Mexico City

Conditions are expected to mirror those experienced in Austin, with dry and hot weather anticipated throughout the weekend. No rain is forecast for Mexico City, with temperatures reaching 27 degrees Celsius for both qualifying and the race.
