George Russell has claimed a commanding pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, capitalising on a costly mistake by championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who crashed during the opening qualifying session and will line up 16th on the grid.
Russell delivered a masterclass throughout the three practice sessions and maintained his exceptional pace into the final qualifying segment, ultimately finishing eighth tenths of a second clear of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. According to ESPN's Azerbaijan Grand Prix coverage, Russell had already demonstrated his dominance on Friday, setting a fastest time of 1:43.347 in FP2 while Antonelli trailed by 0.552 seconds.
The championship leader's qualifying campaign unravelled early when he clipped the inside wall at Turn 1 during Q1. Despite attempting to continue and nurse the damaged car back to the pit lane, Antonelli was instructed to bring the vehicle to a halt in the middle sector, ending his qualifying effort prematurely.
This represents a significant opportunity for Russell to chip away at his 81-point deficit to Antonelli. The race will take place on Saturday at 12pm BST, with build-up coverage beginning at 10.30am, broadcast live on Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports Main Event. The race is scheduled for Saturday rather than Sunday because Sunday is Remembrance Day in Azerbaijan.
McLaren's Oscar Piastri secured third place on the grid, marking his best qualifying result since July's Hungarian Grand Prix. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar claimed fourth position in his return from a wrist injury, having missed the previous three race weekends.
Max Verstappen appeared poised to challenge Russell for pole but was undone by yellow flags triggered when Lando Norris locked up into Turn 3 during the final Q3 runs. Norris will start fifth despite the incident, while Verstappen lines up eighth, sandwiched between Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton in sixth and Alpine's Pierre Gasly in seventh.
Williams achieved a significant milestone by reaching Q3 for the first time this season, with Carlos Sainz qualifying ninth and making the most of their major upgrade package that has eliminated excess weight from the car. Alpine's Franco Colapinto rounded out the top ten in tenth place.
