Furyk charts year-round Ryder Cup strategy as USA seeks first European victory in 34 years

Jim Furyk has laid out an ambitious blueprint for Team USA's assault on the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, demanding that his veterans become mentors to younger players and insisting the competition must dominate American golf thinking throughout the entire calendar year.

The former US Open champion will captain the United States at the Irish venue next September, live on Sky Sports, returning to the role after presiding over defeat at Le Golf National in 2018. Since then, Furyk has served as a vice-captain for three consecutive Ryder Cups and guided Team USA to victory at the 2024 Presidents Cup in Montreal against the Internationals.

Furyk has been involved in every American Ryder Cup team in some capacity since 1997, but Team USA faces a daunting challenge at Adare Manor: they have not claimed an away victory over Team Europe in 34 years. The captain is acutely aware of the scale of the task ahead.

If you saw our team room and you see they travel together, these guys get along well and they're fine, but we haven't got it done from a team perspective
, Furyk told Sky Sports.

One glaring weakness demands immediate attention. The Americans have lost 26 of their last 34 foursomes matches—a format that has become a persistent thorn in their side. Rather than viewing this as an isolated problem, Furyk intends to overhaul the entire preparation process from the ground up.

I think we're going to go top to bottom (to improve things). We're going to start with the captains, getting them (the players) in better pairings and getting them more prepared in the way we practice and get ready.

The captain's philosophy represents a fundamental shift in how Team USA approaches the biennial contest. Furyk rejected the notion that assembling a team just days before competition can succeed, instead advocating for a continuous, year-long process of preparation and team-building.

The way we look at it throughout the year, it's not like you throw these guys together 12 days out in advance and then you figure it out! This is a process and it's something we need to be thinking about all year long in 2027.

Central to this strategy is the role of experienced players. Furyk is calling on his veterans to take younger squad members under their wing, playing practice rounds with them and preparing them for the intensity of Ryder Cup golf.

I need my veterans to step up, take some of the younger players under their wing and play practice rounds with them. Let them know what the Ryder Cup is all about, what they can expect on that first tee and get them excited about making this team.

That process is not a one-month window. For us it needs to be a 24-month window, if that makes sense. We should be thinking about the Ryder Cup all the time and it's something I'd like to put in place.

Learning from 2018 defeat

Furyk's determination to improve stems partly from regret about his previous captaincy. In 2018, Team USA suffered a 17.5-10.5 defeat at Le Golf National, a loss Furyk has acknowledged left him without the right players for the course setup. He has vowed not to repeat those mistakes.

You would have to be arrogant to say 'no, we didn't win, but I do it exactly the same!'
, Furyk reflected.
Of course you wouldn't!

The captain credited his time as a vice-captain with broadening his perspective on team leadership. Serving alongside previous captains has given him insights into the complexities of managing personalities, pairings and strategy at the highest level.

I was getting started in that captaincy career back then. I'd played in a lot of events, but sitting on the other side as a captain is a totally different process and a totally different outlook on teams.

I think I've grown as a leader. I think I've been a backboard for some of our captains along the way, with the experience I've had.

To have that opportunity now to come back as captain for a Ryder Cup, and maybe pave the way for the future for this American team, is something I'm very proud to be asked to do. I take it very, very seriously.

Structural changes underway

Beyond philosophy, Furyk is implementing concrete operational changes. According to PGA Tour reporting, the captain has replaced Scouts Consulting Group with a new analytics team led by Justin Ray and Hunter Stewart. This restructuring reflects Furyk's commitment to evolving how the team is built, paired and prepared for competition.

The qualification system itself has been redesigned. According to PGA Tour sources, the new U.S. qualification points system counts results only during the season leading into the Ryder Cup, with points for 2027 beginning at The American Express in January. This ensures that only recent form determines selection, eliminating the possibility of outdated rankings influencing team composition.

Despite these preparations, Furyk has adopted an underdog mentality heading into the contest. He acknowledged that while the United States may have a stronger side based on world rankings, the challenge of winning away from home in Europe remains formidable.

Donald's European ambitions

Standing in Furyk's way is Luke Donald, the European captain seeking to achieve something no captain in Ryder Cup history has accomplished: three consecutive victories. Donald has already overseen European triumphs in 2023 and 2025, and he is determined to make Adare Manor a hat-trick.

Donald has been methodical in his preparation, having gathered 16 European players at Adare Manor for an early taste of the 2027 venue, blending established campaigners with potential debutants. The European captain is confident in his team's ability to defend their record.

I think we have a good process in place with a great team, people who work really hard behind the scenes, but every Ryder Cup is different
, Donald told Sky Sports.

It's a unique course, different players usually and you've got to bring something new, different aspects to make it fun and different aspects to get them in the right frame of mind.

Donald expects to make changes to his squad composition, viewing fresh faces as essential to maintaining Europe's competitive edge.

I expect there to be a few changes this year. I think that's good, to have a little bit of freshness, bring on the next generation of players and get them involved.

The European captain is keenly aware of the historical significance of defending home soil. Europe has an exceptional record at home, and Donald is determined to preserve that advantage.

Those decisions are ongoing and really churning around the brain, but hopefully we'll be ready.

As I've said many times, I think home Ryder Cups still offer the most pressure to protect that record that we have - it's no small feat. Someone's American team are bound to win away at some point - I just don't want it to be on my watch!

We've had a lot of success the last four years and we'll take that confidence into this one. We understand that we've defended home soil very well and I think that's something to lean into.

Donald also dismissed the notion that the Americans are underdogs, viewing such talk as merely a mentality shift rather than a reflection of true competitive balance.

The underdog is just a mentality thing for us - we want to prove we can beat the might of the United States.

What happens next

The 2027 Ryder Cup is scheduled for September 13–19 at Adare Manor, with competition days running from September 17–19. The centenary edition will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, offering fans the chance to witness what promises to be a compelling battle between two determined captains and their teams. Furyk's year-round preparation strategy will be tested against Donald's quest for history, with the Irish venue providing the stage for one of golf's most prestigious competitions.
