Etienne poised to strike in Bath maiden
Richard Spencer's Etienne arrives at Bath with credentials that mark him out as the standout prospect in the 14:00 EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes. The colt made an encouraging debut when narrowly denied by a short head, demonstrating enough promise to suggest maiden success was within reach.
His subsequent outing in the Weatherbys Super Sprint saw further improvement, though he had to settle for fourth place. She was very well backed at Chester last time out but found the wide trip and drop in distance both worked against her. A return to a furlong and a half longer should suit her profile much better, and she should go well. According to Racing Post, Quebella is the betting favourite at 11/4 for the contest, which carries a winner's prize of £10,468 with six runners declared.
Pierian looked promising when winning by nine lengths at Yarmouth in May, but has since disappointed in her subsequent outings. She was stepped into listed company before contesting a handicap at Glorious Goodwood, which suggests connections believe there is more to come from her. She can prove competitive if she progresses from her earlier season efforts.
The in-form duo of Mythical Bird and Aravalli both scored last time out, with Aravalli particularly eye-catching after succeeding in four of her last five starts. Both should go well in what shapes as a wide-open handicap.
Yordan bids to make it two from three at Newcastle
At Newcastle, the 14:45 Sunday Lunch At The Border Minstrel EBF Novice Stakes features an intriguing three-year-old in Yordan, who is bidding to back up a facile success. The colt was purchased for 160,000gns as a yearling in October 2024, but had to wait until July 2026 to make his belated debut.
Since arriving on the track, Yordan has made a promising start at three years old. He finished a close second on debut before winning by nearly three lengths when dropped to six furlongs last month at Southwell, suggesting the shorter trip suits his running style. According to Racing TV, the novice stakes is listed as a 14-runner race, with Yordan carrying a winning penalty into this assignment.
Harry Vigors has been booked to ride, an appointment that offsets the weight Yordan shoulders as the winner. With a clear class edge on paper, he could take all the beating when attempting to make it two wins from three starts.
Ennoble was previously trained by Joseph O'Brien and contains solid two-year-old form, but Antony Brittain would need to revitalise this horse as it seems he may not have trained on since his earlier efforts. Brash has held a consistent level of form to date and can again run creditably, however he is much more exposed and would need to make a miraculous improvement to even threaten Yordan.
