Stephen Irvine's ambitious step up to flyweight ended in devastating fashion at ONE Fight Night 45, as the Scottish Muay Thai fighter was stopped by Suablack Tor Pran49 in a stunning second-round reversal at Bangkok's Lumpinee Stadium.
The Glasgow striker, known as 'El Matador', had moved up from strawweight hoping to use the weight gain as a springboard towards a ONE Championship flyweight Muay Thai world title challenge. Instead, he faced a harsh lesson against the 85-fight veteran, who claimed the co-main event victory and earned the $50,000 performance bonus with a perfectly-timed elbow strike.
According to ONE Championship's official results, the stoppage came at 1:39 of the second round, with a right hand dropping Irvine before the finishing left elbow ended the contest.
Irvine began promisingly, slipping Suablack's early boxing combinations and countering with a sharp right hand that sent the Thai fighter to the canvas for an eight-count in the final seconds of round one. For a fleeting moment, the Scot's pre-fight prediction of a knockout and bonus seemed within reach.
The momentum shifted dramatically early in the second round. Irvine pressed forward with punches, kicks and heavy elbows, but Suablack exploded forward with a left cross that knocked the Glasgow fighter down and seized control of the bout.
Irvine rose from the eight-count and appeared composed, but his reprieve was brief. As he moved forward searching for a knee strike, Suablack unleashed a body kick followed by another left cross, then lunged with a powerful elbow that struck Irvine's face with sickening precision and sent him crashing to the canvas.
When the referee administered the second eight-count, Irvine stumbled and failed to rise, prompting the official to wave off the match.
According to Suablack's post-fight interview with ONE Championship, the Thai fighter remained calm after being knocked down and believed he could finish Irvine with an elbow, having won many of his ONE fights with that strike. Suablack also revealed plans to give his $50,000 bonus to his wife, crediting her support throughout his career.
For Irvine, this defeat represents a significant setback just nine months after securing his lucrative main-roster contract with ONE Championship. The Scottish fighter had earned that deal with a first-round finish of Rambong Sor Therapat, following a 7-1 record on ONE Friday Fights that suggested he was ready for elite competition.
The weight division change, which Irvine had believed would suit his strengths, instead exposed the considerable gap between his previous level and the flyweight elite. Rebuilding his title aspirations will require significant work and likely another string of victories before he can credibly challenge for world title gold.
Suablack's record improved to 63-23, establishing him as a genuine threat in the flyweight Muay Thai division. The Thai southpaw's comeback victory demonstrated the danger of his striking arsenal and his ability to turn fights in an instant. Prior to this bout, Suablack had suffered a first-round knockout loss to Hyu "Mister Pepper" in a kickboxing bout at ONE Fight Night 41, making this victory a significant rebound performance.
Irvine will need to regroup and plot a path back to contention, though no confirmed next opponent has been announced for the Glasgow striker as he contemplates his next move in the competitive flyweight Muay Thai landscape.
