Zizou Bergs produced the finest result of his career by eliminating second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the third round of the Shanghai Masters, a victory that mathematically confirmed Alexander Zverev's position atop the year-end rankings for the first time.
The Belgian world No 39 prevailed 7-5 7-6 (7-4) in a match lasting two hours and three minutes, according to Shanghai Masters records. Bergs recovered from a precarious position in the second set when he failed to serve out the match at 6-5, only to dominate the subsequent tie-break and secure his breakthrough victory.
Alcaraz's departure from the tournament, combined with current world No 1 Jannik Sinner's early withdrawal due to a persistent knee injury that has troubled him since Wimbledon, means Zverev will conclude 2026 as the top-ranked player. The German will become the first German to finish a season as year-end No 1.
Zverev, who captured both the French Open and US Open this summer for his maiden major titles, reflected on his remarkable achievement with evident satisfaction.
It's been a fantastic season for me winning in Paris and New York and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true. So much work and effort have been put into achieving this goal, especially after coming back from the ankle injury. I look forward to finishing the season in style.
The German's path to the final continues, as he advanced to face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after defeating Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
Bergs breaks through against elite opposition
Bergs' performance against Alcaraz showcased his growing confidence against the sport's elite. The Belgian converted three of the four break points he created, whilst Alcaraz managed to convert both of his two opportunities. In terms of aggressive play, Bergs struck 24 winners to Alcaraz's 16.
Speaking after his victory, Bergs acknowledged the surreal nature of his achievement.
It is a bit of disbelief and not feeling too much. It is one of the moments you don't really realise what it going on, you are just in the moment, focused on the points you have to play.
The Belgian praised his execution in the decisive tie-break, particularly after the disappointment of failing to close out the second set.
I am very happy how I handled the tie-break. It is never easy when you get broken serving for the match but in the tie-break I played the key moments and served big.
Bergs revealed a deeper insight into his mindset when competing against established stars, suggesting that psychological barriers have previously hindered his performances.
I often have too much respect for these guys. That is part of the culture and I am proud of that but it is a little bit in the way when you play them. I had a moment here last year against Novak Djokovic where I was definitely playing the name not the guy, so to have this moment [against Alcaraz] is a relief. I now feel I can win against those guys, not just play against them.
Bergs will now face American Tommy Paul in the fourth round. Paul advanced by defeating defending champion Valentin Vacherot 6-4 6-2. The two players have met previously at Indian Wells in March, where Paul won 6-1, 6-2.
Alcaraz's injury-plagued season continues
Alcaraz had arrived in Shanghai on the back of winning the Japan Open in Tokyo the previous Tuesday, seeking to claim a ninth ATP Masters 1000 title and his first of a campaign disrupted by injury concerns. His exit marks another setback in what has been a frustrating year for the Spanish star.
Medvedev returns to action following Beijing incident
Elsewhere in the men's draw, 2019 Shanghai champion Daniil Medvedev advanced to the fourth round with a straight-sets victory over qualifier Dalibor Svrcina. Medvedev had been forced to default at the previous week's China Open in Beijing after striking a fan with a ball during his semi-final against Novak Djokovic.
Medvedev will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the next round. The Greek player produced an upset victory over 11th seed Taylor Fritz, winning 3-6 7-5 6-3 to progress.
Kartal's comeback gathers momentum in Wuhan
At the Wuhan Open, Britain's Sonay Kartal continued her encouraging return to competitive tennis by defeating top-50 opponent Anhelina Kalinina. The British No 5 won 7-5 6-2 in 91 minutes, striking four aces in the process.
Kartal had recently returned from a six-month absence caused by a stress fracture in her back. She had reached the third round of the Beijing Open in her first WTA tournament back, and her performance in Wuhan suggests her recovery is progressing well.
I've thrown myself in the deep end, playing [my] first few events playing the best players in the world. It's definitely a challenge, but I'm happy with the level that I've managed to produce. There is still got a long way to go to get to back where I left off, but I'm happy. It's looking positive and I'm feeling good.
Kartal will face ninth seed Belinda Bencic in the second round. Her fellow British player Katie Boulter begins her campaign on Tuesday against 11th seed Diana Schnaider.
Wang's dominant display in Wuhan upset
The most striking result of the day at the Wuhan Open came when Xiyu Wang delivered a commanding performance against her namesake Xinyu Wang, winning 6-2 6-0. The result constituted a significant upset, with Xiyu ranked 91st in the world whilst Xinyu held a position of 39th.
Xiyu will advance to face Slovakia's Mia Pohankova in the second round.
