LeBron James makes Philadelphia 76ers debut in preseason clash with Brooklyn Nets ahead of NBA-record 24th season

LeBron James has committed to ongoing development alongside his new franchise after delivering an encouraging performance in his Philadelphia 76ers debut during a preseason contest against the Brooklyn Nets. The 41-year-old veteran, who inked a two-year deal worth $8 million with the 76ers this summer following eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, is embarking on his record-breaking 24th NBA campaign.

James accumulated 10 points, five assists and four rebounds during the opening half, propelling Philadelphia to a 58-56 advantage before taking a seat for the remainder of the contest. The 76ers ultimately fell short, losing 114-108 to Brooklyn. Over his 18 minutes of action, James converted all eight of his free throw attempts after being fouled four times, though he recorded just one field goal attempt. He also contributed one steal during his time on the floor.

The all-time leading scorer in NBA history didn't launch a field goal until drawing contact on a drive with approximately five minutes left in the opening quarter. However, given the depth of talent surrounding him, James may not need to shoulder the offensive load as heavily during the final chapter of his career.

Philadelphia supporters witnessed their first glimpse of the revamped roster constructed over the offseason. Alongside James stood fellow All-Star Jaylen Brown, acquired from the Boston Celtics, complemented by returning cornerstones Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.

Maxey led the way with 14 points, while each of the other starters contributed at least six points, with the team demonstrating sharp ball movement at various stretches.

Obviously, I was wearing a new uniform, but the game is the game, and the game is needed to be played on the floor. I was happy to be able to log some minutes with the guys that we've been going at each other in practice for the last two weeks, a week and a half.

James reflected on his transition following the preseason matchup. He acknowledged the mental reset required when joining a new organization, even for someone with his extensive experience.

Obviously, I have my routine, but when you go through an offseason, you've got to remember what your routine was again, no matter how many, how long you've been in it. All of that stuff plays a part. So I'm still getting everything, on the court and off the court, living and also being around these guys every day. It's a lot of adjustment for me, but, every day we'll get better and better.

The Nets proved competitive throughout the contest, with Julius Randle contributing 14 points and Brooklyn outscoring Philadelphia 37-23 in the third quarter, a decisive stretch that ultimately determined the outcome.

Upcoming schedule and roster adjustments

The 76ers have two remaining preseason contests, both against the Celtics, before commencing their regular season campaign on October 20 in New York. The Knicks will unveil their championship banner at that opening matchup, commemorating their success from the previous season.

James was ruled out for the 76ers' October 10 preseason game against Boston for rest, with Philadelphia scheduled to host the Celtics again on October 16 in its final preseason game before the regular season begins.
