The Tampa Bay Buccaneers arrived at Dallas as the NFL's only winless team, yet they departed with a stunning 24-16 victory over the Cowboys on Thursday night, with running back Bucky Irving and undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels leading a performance that left the home crowd stunned.
Irving delivered a career-defining display, accumulating 165 rushing yards and finding the end zone twice. His 72-yard run in the second half proved pivotal, setting up Tampa Bay's go-ahead touchdown and shifting momentum decisively in the visitors' favour.
Daniels, making only his second NFL start, orchestrated a near-flawless offensive display. The rookie completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards, including a touchdown toss to Irving in the opening half, while maintaining a turnover-free performance despite Dallas's defensive efforts. According to Buccaneers game coverage, Daniels credited improved composure in the pocket for his enhanced performance in this second outing.
The rookie is deputising for Baker Mayfield, the Buccaneers' starting quarterback, who remains sidelined with a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand and is not expected to return for at least another week. Tampa Bay's official updates indicate that Daniels is likely to make his third consecutive start when the Buccaneers face Pittsburgh, with Mayfield not expected to be available even as an emergency option.
Dallas's offensive struggles began immediately after halftime. Irving's explosive 72-yard run on the opening play of the second half was followed by receiver Emeka Egbuka's 14-yard touchdown on a jet sweep, extending Tampa Bay's advantage. Dak Prescott then threw his first interception, and the Cowboys' defence left Tez Johnson completely unmarked on a 64-yard reception that led directly to Irving's second touchdown near the goal line.
With the Buccaneers leading 21-10, the situation deteriorated further for Dallas. KaVontae Turpin fumbled on the subsequent kickoff, and although Tampa Bay initially faced a third-and-21 from the Cowboys' 48-yard line, Daniels connected with Egbuka for a 21-yard gain to keep the drive alive. Chase McLaughlin's 41-yard field goal extended the lead to 24-10, effectively sealing the outcome.
Prescott mounted a late rally, orchestrating a 99-yard drive that culminated in a 13-yard touchdown pass to George Pickens in the fourth quarter, but his second interception—this one off a tipped pass—came with just two minutes remaining and handed Tampa Bay the victory. The Dallas quarterback finished with 316 yards on 24 of 42 completions, marking his first two-interception game of the season since the opening loss to the New York Giants.
Prescott addresses stadium worker's 'embarrassing' comment
A video clip circulated on social media after the match showing a stadium worker audibly saying "embarrassing" as Prescott walked past. The quarterback addressed the incident directly during his post-game remarks.
If you're saying it's embarrassing, say it's embarrassing. If you're saying it to me, then say it to me. I hate that it's even being talked about, to be honest with you.
Though Prescott stopped short of applying the same descriptor to the loss itself, he acknowledged the magnitude of the defeat.
I think coach Brian Schottenheimer said it best in the locker room: In this league, you've got to win the games you're supposed to win. And when a winless team comes into your home stadium in a Thursday night primetime game, we're supposed to win that.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones echoed the frustration, stating afterwards:
Extraordinarily, extraordinarily disappointed. You really do need to get it done when it's there to take.
Defensive absences compound Dallas's struggles
The Cowboys (2-3) extended their inconsistent start to the season, with an offensive performance that proved as undisciplined as their defence has been throughout their two seasons under head coach Brian Schottenheimer. The team was further hampered by the absence of cornerback Joey Porter Jr, who was ruled out as a late scratch in what was supposed to be his second appearance following his recent trade acquisition from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
What comes next
Dallas will travel to Green Bay on Sunday, October 18, seeking to arrest their slide. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, will host Pittsburgh on the same day, with Daniels expected to make his third consecutive start as the Buccaneers attempt to build on their breakthrough victory.
The undrafted rookie's emergence represents a remarkable turnaround for a franchise that began the week without a win. Daniels became the first undrafted rookie ever to start a game for Tampa Bay in Week 4, when the Buccaneers fell 17-14 to Green Bay, but Thursday's dominant road performance suggests the team may have found a capable solution at quarterback during Mayfield's recovery.
