Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow

Joe Burrow is arriving in Spain as one of the most dominant forces in professional football this season, and Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor is in no doubt about his quarterback's standing on the world stage. According to Sky Sports, Taylor has described Burrow as

arguably the best passer in the world right now
, a statement backed up by the numbers the 5-2 Bengals bring to the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday.

The Bengals travel to Madrid to face the Atlanta Falcons in an NFL International Series clash that will be broadcast live on Sky Sports. Burrow's credentials this season are staggering: he leads the entire league with a completion percentage of 73, has amassed 2,115 passing yards, and sits atop the NFL with 20 touchdown passes against just six interceptions. His 302.1 yards per game average also ranks first among all quarterbacks.

Taylor spoke exclusively to Sky Sports about what elevates Burrow above the rest of the field.

His consistency, and he never wastes a second trying to get himself better. Whether it's his footwork, his placement, reading the body language of the receiver, studying the defense he's going against. He's unbelievable, and he's playing at a high level this year. We're hoping to get that going again on Sunday.

The Bengals' momentum heading into Europe is particularly strong. According to ESPN, Cincinnati defeated Tennessee 43–36 in overtime on November 1, with Burrow throwing five touchdown passes and running for the game-winning score, extending the Bengals' winning streak to three games.

Burrow's excellence is amplified by the weapons surrounding him. Tee Higgins ranks second in the NFL with 726 receiving yards, while Ja'Marr Chase has accumulated 492 yards, both from 61 targets apiece. The pair form a rare dual-threat receiving corps that spearheads the league's top passing attack.

Taylor reflected on the luxury of deploying both elite receivers on the same roster.

To have them both on the same team is pretty luxurious for us. And to be able to put them on the same side, different sides, if defenses are gonna single one of them usually there's great opportunities there for those guys behind them. They both have great attention to detail, so we're able to move them around.

On the defensive side of the ball, Cincinnati has sought to strengthen a unit that has historically been a weakness. The Bengals traded for former New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence during the offseason to address their front seven.

We got a lot of guys up front that are really talented, Dexter certainly helps us lead the play there. He can defend the run and the pass. Teams really have to have a great plan for him in the run and pass game, so he's been a great addition for a lot of things.

The Bengals' defensive challenge on Sunday will centre on containing Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson, who leads the NFL with 780 rushing yards this season. However, Robinson has failed to record a 100-yard game in the Falcons' last four matchups. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Robinson is averaging 97.5 rushing yards per game, though Cincinnati allowed Tennessee to rush for 158 yards in its most recent game, suggesting potential vulnerability in that area.

Taylor acknowledged Robinson's elite status within the league.

The running back (Robinson) stands out. He's arguably the best one in the league. You gotta have a great plan. He can go off real quick and then all the things they build off that, the play action, the naked bootlegs, the screens. Great on defense, quarterback is great. They do a really good job on that scheme, playing together. And it's gonna make it difficult.

The Falcons arrive in Madrid having suffered a significant setback. ESPN reported that Atlanta lost 16–0 to Tampa Bay on November 1, with quarterback Michael Penix Jr. throwing a career-high four interceptions. Despite that loss, the Falcons' defence has been a strength this season, recording at least one takeaway in seven of their first eight games.

Burrow's European dream

Beyond the statistics and tactical considerations, Burrow has embraced the opportunity to play abroad as part of the NFL's global expansion efforts.

It means a lot to me that we're here. This is Year 7 for me, and I haven't been overseas yet and we keep adding more and more games to try and build the NFL globally. I think it's worked over the last five years and hoping to add more and continue to build. I love being a part of that and want to help grow the game.

The quarterback has made the most of his time in Madrid, visiting cultural landmarks during the week.

This is somewhere I've always wanted to go, and so to be able to do it while doing what I love, playing football, really is a dream come true.
Burrow spent Wednesday at the Museo del Prado and has planned visits to additional museums and art galleries before Sunday's contest.

However, maintaining anonymity in a foreign country has proven more challenging than anticipated.

I ran into some students studying abroad from the United States the other day when I was walking around, that was certainly surprising. It's often a little more than I expect when I'm in a different country, I usually expect to go pretty incognito and not have anybody recognise me, it's a little more than that. But I love being out here because I can feel like a normal person a little bit.

Historical context and series record

This matchup carries historical significance for both franchises. The Bengals lead the all-time series 10–5 and won the teams' last meeting, 35–17, on October 23, 2022. For Cincinnati, this represents the third regular-season international game in franchise history, following previous contests in London in 2016 and 2019.
