Celestini's Burnley debut ends in frustration as Portsmouth hold firm at Turf Moor

Fabio Celestini's first match in charge of Burnley delivered little cause for optimism as the Swiss manager's side laboured to a goalless stalemate against Portsmouth at Turf Moor in a Championship encounter that epitomised the club's current struggles. According to Sky Sports, the hosts created numerous openings in the opening period but squandered them through poor finishing and profligacy in front of goal.

Celestini, who turned 51 on Saturday, inherited a side in deep trouble. The Burnley Express reported that Celestini said he had joined to build a longer-term project, not just to avoid relegation, having replaced Nicky Hayen, who was sacked after one win in 12 league games. Hayen's dismissal followed a 4-1 defeat to Lincoln City, which left Burnley 22nd. Going into this fixture, Burnley occupied 22nd place with eight points from 12 matches, while Portsmouth sat 12th with 18 points.

The visitors came close to breaking the deadlock early when Marlon Pack lofted the ball into an empty net after 12 minutes. However, referee Ruebyn Ricardo ruled it out, determining that Burnley goalkeeper Gregoire Coudert had been fouled by Portsmouth's Ryan Kavuma-McQueen in a collision that left the keeper prone on the turf.

After a sluggish opening, Burnley gradually seized control of proceedings as the first half progressed. Kyle Walker tested Nicolas Schmid with the first meaningful attempt on target in the 25th minute, and the Clarets continued to probe. Andreas Hountondji and Largie Ramazani both drew saves from the Portsmouth goalkeeper as Burnley pressed for an opening goal.

The atmosphere at Turf Moor grew increasingly tense as the hosts' profligacy in front of goal became apparent. Marcus Edwards' inability to engineer a shooting opportunity after a mazy run into the penalty area prompted groans from the crowd. Worse followed when Edwards, Burnley's number 10, squandered a gilt-edged chance from just a few yards out, snatching at the ball as it flashed across the box and inexplicably sending it over the crossbar.

Frustration mounted when Kyle Walker was denied a penalty following a trip in the box by Iyad Mohamed. The mood darkened further when Largie Ramazani's well-executed goal was disallowed because Marcus Edwards had strayed into an offside position during the build-up.

Portsmouth's second-half adjustments proved effective in stemming Burnley's tide. The introduction of Ebou Adams and Tyrese Shade reinvigorated the south-coast visitors, and the hosts' control of the match diminished markedly after the interval. Abu Kamara nearly broke the deadlock on 59 minutes when he cut inside and arced a shot over the bar.

On Halloween, Burnley's continued inability to find a breakthrough served as a chilling reminder of their predicament, with the club still languishing in the relegation zone. The biggest moment of cheer came when Josh Cullen was introduced from the bench in the 72nd minute, marking his first appearance of an injury-blighted campaign. Yet even his introduction could not spark the confidence-drained Clarets into life.

Ramazani twice failed to make meaningful contact with crosses delivered to the back post as the contest petered out into a stalemate. The frustration boiled over in the closing stages when Edwards' erratic display culminated in his substitution being greeted with jeers from the home supporters.

What happens next

Burnley's next league match is away to Queens Park Rangers on 3 November 2026, offering Celestini an immediate opportunity to make a winning impression in his new role.
