Xabi Alonso has drawn a striking comparison between Chelsea's Joao Pedro and Karim Benzema, the legendary Real Madrid striker, while insisting the 24-year-old belongs in the same conversation as Manchester City's Erling Haaland.
The Chelsea manager's assessment came after Joao Pedro was officially confirmed as the Premier League's August 2026 Player of the Month, following a devastating start to the season that saw him contribute two goals and two assists across his opening three games for the Blues.
Alonso expressed his delight at the Brazilian's impact and outlined why he believes the forward deserves recognition among the division's elite strikers.

If you count how many top strikers we have in the Premier League, I am sure that Joao is there. So I would rate him that way.

Alonso expanded on his assessment by highlighting the similarities he observes between Joao Pedro and Benzema, who accumulated 354 goals across 658 appearances during his illustrious spell at the Bernabéu.
In many things he reminds me of Benzema,Alonso explained.
Because he is good in the box, he is good out of the box, he is good coming to the left side, he is good with the head.
He is very complete and he is intelligent.
He is still young. He still has things to develop. But he has many, many absolutely outstanding qualities.
The award itself represented a significant milestone for Joao Pedro. According to the Premier League, he became the seventh Brazilian to win the Player of the Month award, and he is the first Chelsea player to claim the honour since Cole Palmer won it in September 2024. For me, it's very good when you look behind and you have two No 10s like Cole and Morgan. I'm very happy to play with them.

I think Cole can pass very well but also he can score. Morgan is a little bit the same.
I think the way we think is very similar, but in the same way, I am more of a nine; I hold the ball more. Cole is more of a 10, and Morgan is more carrying the ball and dribbling.
