Divine Mukasa celebrates with his team-mates after giving West Ham the lead at Swansea

West Ham delivered a statement victory at the Swansea.com Stadium, halting the hosts' four-match winning run with a disciplined 1-0 away performance that cuts the gap to the Championship summit to just a single point. According to Sky Sports, Divine Mukasa's composed first-half finish proved decisive on an afternoon when a new attendance record of 20,973 was set in South Wales.

The result represents a significant scalp for Nuno Espirito Santo's side, who had demolished Lincoln 6-0 in midweek but showed they can grind out results in tighter contests. West Ham's squad included Divine Mukasa in the starting XI after he replaced Joël Piroe, having recently made his England Under-21 debut.

The Hammers climb to second place, above Middlesbrough on goal difference, and now sit within touching distance of Swansea, who suffered their first home defeat since April. The Welsh club had enjoyed a remarkable campaign to that point, winning seven and drawing two of their opening 10 games—their best start since 1923.

Before kick-off, Swansea held 23 points from 10 games while West Ham had accumulated 19, with the visitors' attacking prowess on full display through their 29 league goals at a rate of almost three per game—the highest in England's top four divisions. Swansea, meanwhile, boasted the tightest defence in the Championship before this contest.

The match unfolded as a tactical battle rather than a free-flowing spectacle, with both teams fighting for midfield control and clear-cut opportunities proving scarce. The first shot of any description did not arrive until the 34th minute, but West Ham made their opening count decisively.

Marko Stamenic was caught in possession, allowing Pablo to release Mohamadou Kante down the left flank as Swansea's defenders appealed unsuccessfully for offside. Kante displayed composure on the by-line to locate the unmarked Mukasa, who slotted the ball past Lawrence Vigouroux to register his third goal of the season.

The goal represented only the third that Swansea had conceded at home all season, and the setback galvanised the hosts into action. Adam Idah and Ronaldo both saw shots deflected wide in quick succession before Ben Cabango struck the underside of the crossbar with a swivelled effort in a congested penalty area.

Jay Fulton had flighted a free-kick to the far post that Moussa Yeo headed into Cabango's path, but despite the hosts' pressure and a goalmouth scramble that followed, they could not force an equaliser before the interval.

England international Jarrod Bowen had endured a quiet opening 45 minutes, but the Hammers skipper burst into prominence four minutes after the restart, forcing a full-length save from Vigouroux. The visitors increasingly resembled the league leaders as the goalkeeper produced two excellent stops to deny both Pablo and Bowen in succession.

Swansea continued to press, with Idah firing just wide and Cabango making a hash of a bouncing ball in the penalty area as West Ham struggled to clear Yeo's centre. Substitute Stephen Eustaquio was off target and Idah headed over as the hosts mounted sustained pressure on the visitors' back line.

Bowen's mazy run in the closing stages deserved a better finish than the careless attempt from Manor Solomon that followed, while Ronaldo squandered a great chance to equalise in stoppage time, leaving West Ham to hold firm for a crucial three points.

What happens next

West Ham will host Southampton on 24 October 2026, while Swansea travel to Queens Park Rangers on the same date as both sides look to maintain their push for promotion.
