Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has cautioned Kimi Antonelli that unforeseen circumstances could still upend his championship campaign, even as the Italian driver has built a commanding advantage in the standings.
Antonelli's consecutive victories at Monza and Madrid have extended his lead over team-mate George Russell to 81 points with nine rounds remaining on the calendar. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and McLaren's Lando Norris occupy third and fourth positions respectively, both now trailing by more than 100 points.
The 20-year-old has won eight races this season—six more victories than any rival driver. According to Reuters, his triumph at Monza on September 6 made him the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix in 60 years, a result he described as the "best day of my life so far."
Despite holding such a dominant position, Antonelli has been vocal about not allowing championship thoughts to occupy his mind—a mindset that Wolff believes is entirely genuine.
I promise you he's not thinking about it. The way this kid is able to compartmentalise and be the young kid and then get into the car and be the mature racing driver. That's why if Kimi says to himself, 'I'm not thinking about the championship,' he's not thinking about the championship. And we are also trying, the parents and myself and the team, saying this is not finished.
Antonelli has led the championship since his victory at the season's third round in Japan on March 29. His current 81-point advantage following Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix represents the largest margin he has held throughout the campaign.
However, Wolff stressed that both driver and team must remain vigilant against the unpredictable nature of motorsport.
There are black swan events, they can come and you're losing something out of your hand when you didn't think it was possible to lose. So, he's not going to think about it.
The Mercedes principal's caution comes as the championship has tightened considerably since the summer break. According to The Guardian, Wolff compared Antonelli to the sport's greats following his Monza victory, when the driver led Russell by 66 points and Hamilton by 76 points. The lead has since expanded further after his Madrid success.
Speaking after his victory in Spain, Antonelli himself acknowledged that the title race remains far from settled.
Yeah, it [the points lead] is great, but we've just got to keep pushing, keep delivering the results and just trying to do the best job I can whenever I go on track. Because, of course, yes, I have a big lead, but you never know what can happen. So just need to be ready for anything and keep maximising every opportunity I get, and then we'll see where we end up at the end of the year.
The young driver credits his support network, particularly his father Marco, with keeping him grounded amid the pressure of leading the championship.
I'm lucky to have really good people around me. I have an incredible team that supports me, great family. Especially my dad is the one that keeps me on the ground. Definitely having good people helps a lot. And yeah, that's it. On my side, as I said many times, I just try to do my best every race, trying to really drive as fast as I can whenever I go in the car. And then we'll see where we end up at the end of the year. But definitely I don't want to overcomplicate things just drive worrying about championship or result. Just driving, doing my best.
According to BBC Sport, Antonelli has now claimed seven of the 13 grands prix contested so far this season, underlining his dominance. His Monza success was particularly significant, as Reuters reported that he started from 19th on the grid due to penalties before storming through the field to claim victory.

With ten meetings remaining after Monza, according to The Guardian's reporting, Antonelli and Mercedes face a crucial stretch of the season. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will kick off a triple-header of races from September 24-26, with the Baku race taking place on a Saturday. The championship battle will intensify as rivals attempt to close the gap before the season concludes.
