Raoni Barcelos spent the night under medical observation at a Level 1 trauma centre following a frightening collapse during his UFC Vegas 121 bout against Raul Rosas Jr at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas.
The 39-year-old Brazilian fighter went down hard beneath a Rosas takedown with just 1:38 remaining in the fifth round and remained motionless on the canvas. Medical personnel rushed to his aid inside the cage before he was stretchered away from the venue.
Rosas Jr immediately waved to the referee to signal the end of the contest.
The UFC released an official statement detailing Barcelos' condition:
Following his fight tonight, Raoni Barcelos was immediately transported to a Level 1 trauma center for evaluation. The hospital medical team conducted a CT scan and comprehensive assessment, and he is currently being monitored. Barcelos is stable, alert and responsive, with full movement. He will remain under medical supervision.
Barcelos, a fixture on the UFC roster since 2018, had arrived at this event riding a five-fight winning streak and was making his promotional headlining debut. The Brazilian had been ahead on the scorecards entering the final round when the shocking finish occurred, stemming from what appeared to be a routine takedown.
Rosas Jr, just 21 years old, extended his own winning run to six consecutive victories. The fight itself had been a gruelling affair, with both competitors landing over 300 strikes apiece before the dramatic conclusion, earning the Fight of the Night bonus.
The young fighter's demeanour changed immediately upon realising the severity of Barcelos' condition. In his post-fight remarks, Rosas Jr showed genuine concern for his opponent, saying:
I want everybody tonight to please pray for Raoni Barcelos. He's a warrior.
