Conor McGregor will have surgery on his injured knee

Conor McGregor's long-awaited return to the octagon ended in heartbreak after just 69 seconds when a knee injury forced him to withdraw from his bout against Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Fighting for the first time in more than five years, McGregor executed a flying left roundhouse kick in the opening moments of the first round and landed awkwardly on his right knee. After attempting to continue with two further strikes, it became clear he could not proceed and the fight was stopped, with Holloway awarded a first-round TKO at 1:09.

McGregor's response on social media revealed the severity of his distress.

My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury/injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.

He later reinforced the point in a separate statement.

I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. I had no injury/injuries going into the fight.

Despite the setback, McGregor expressed his determination to return.

All things work out for my good! All things are possible for me because I am a believer! Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again. Final fight of the contract. Please God!

UFC president Dana White addressed the media after the contest, offering his assessment of the damage.

Five years off in this sport is rough. We're assuming a blown ACL. That's what I assumed when I saw it and that's what the doctors think too.

According to Yahoo Sports, the injury involved a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee.

When questioned whether a pre-existing condition might have contributed, White dismissed the possibility. He noted that no signs of injury were evident during Friday's ceremonial weigh-in, and given the millions of social-media views generated by McGregor's aggressive approach to Holloway at that event, any prior damage would have been apparent to observers.

McGregor's manager John Kavanagh corroborated this account on Facebook, emphasising the preparation that preceded the injury.

That opening jump switch kick was drilled daily for months, multiple times in warm-up. Never an issue. Knee went when he [threw] the very first kick. Doesn't get any worse than this.

Holloway, who was awarded the victory, expressed sympathy for his opponent. During the fight, he kept telling referee Mike Beltran to stop the contest because it was apparent McGregor was injured, but the former champion kept saying, "Fight!" After the bout, Holloway reflected on the moment.

During the fight, you could see his demeanour change. When I saw him hurt, I said, 'Call this, he's hurt.' I just hope for a speedy recovery.

Holloway also suggested a potential rematch could follow.

You guys are lucky because there is going to be a Holloway v McGregor 3 now. It is what it is. I'll sit down with the UFC. There was so much hype for that. We have to run it back one more time. We need one more. I was looking forward to this. I was working hard to get to 170lb and fight this guy. For it to end like this, it sucks.

McGregor's injury history and recent controversies

The 37-year-old Irishman's career has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries and circumstances beyond the octagon. A leg fracture sustained against Dustin Poirier five years prior forced a lengthy absence from competition. A scheduled June 2024 meeting with Michael Chandler was scrapped after McGregor broke a toe during training preparation.

Remarkably, McGregor's history with Holloway includes a prior ACL injury. According to TMZ, McGregor sustained an ACL injury during his first encounter with Holloway in 2013, adding an unusual symmetry to Saturday's outcome.

Beyond sporting setbacks, McGregor faced significant legal challenges. An Irish civil court jury determined in 2024 that he bore liability for assaulting Nikita Hand, who had accused him of rape in 2018. In July 2025, McGregor lost his appeal against the civil jury finding, with the appeal dismissed on all five grounds. The jury found McGregor, who told the court he had consensual sex with Ms Hand, civilly liable for assault.

Additionally, in October 2025, he accepted an 18-month ban for "whereabouts failures" stemming from three missed attempts by Combat Sports Anti-Doping to collect biological samples during 2024. The suspension was backdated and expired in March 2026, allowing him to compete at UFC 329.

Recovery timeline and comeback plans

McGregor has outlined an ambitious recovery schedule. According to Yahoo Sports, he expects a nine-to-12-month rehabilitation period, positioning a potential return window between spring and summer 2027. He has publicly stated his intention to fight again by next summer, with reports indicating he is targeting International Fight Week 2027 as his comeback date.

Signs of progress have already emerged. According to Yahoo Sports, on October 11, McGregor posted an Instagram Stories image showing him sparring, a signal that his recovery work is advancing during the rehabilitation phase.

McGregor has indicated he has one fight remaining on his UFC contract, though the promotion has not publicly confirmed the exact number of bouts left on his deal.

Pimblett's dominant performance

Elsewhere on the UFC 329 card, Paddy Pimblett delivered a statement victory, submitting Benoit Saint Denis with a D'Arce choke in just 52 seconds. The submission came off a failed takedown attempt and earned Pimblett a $100,000 Performance of the Night bonus.

Pimblett had faced questions about his credentials after losing to Justin Gaethje in January's interim lightweight title fight, his first UFC defeat. Since then, Gaethje has gone on to shock the sport by defeating Ilia Topuria at the White House to become the lightweight champion last month.

With his dominant win over Saint Denis, one of the best opponents he has faced outside the champion, Pimblett wasted no time reminding observers of his quality.

Light work. Everyone cancelled me out because I got beat by Gaethje. But what now?
