An Australian athlete has issued a public apology following a health incident that occurred during a Hyrox competition in Beijing on Saturday, stating she will retroactively withdraw from the event despite crossing the finish line first.
Joanna Wietrzyk released a statement via Instagram addressing the incident that took place at the indoor fitness competition. The situation drew widespread attention after footage circulated across social media platforms over the weekend.
In her statement, Wietrzyk acknowledged the broader impact of her decision to continue competing.
I know my actions had an impact beyond myself, and I am genuinely sorry to everyone who was affected, she said.
The athlete, who technically won the race, announced she would forfeit her victory.
I want to offer my sincere apology to the people of China, my fellow competitors, the spectators and the Hyrox organisers for what happened during the race in Beijing,Wietrzyk stated.

Hyrox organisers responded to the incident by releasing their own statement, acknowledging that the situation had not been handled optimally. The organisation confirmed it maintains
clear bio contaminant and medical procedures in place, but explained that circumstances during the race created complications in protocol application.
The organisers noted that
an unforeseen situation aroseduring which established procedures became unclear,
creating ambiguity in how they were applied and understood.
How Hyrox works
Hyrox events require participants to alternate between running one-kilometre segments and completing a series of functional fitness exercises. These stations include a sled push, burpee jumps, indoor rowing, and lunges performed while carrying a sandbag, combining cardiovascular endurance with strength and conditioning challenges.
Hyrox's rapid global expansion
Since its founding in 2017 in Hamburg, Germany, Hyrox has experienced explosive growth in popularity and now operates events across multiple continents. The sport made its mainland China debut in late 2024, with the Beijing event being among the earliest competitions held in the region.
