Thirlby's departure comes just four months before the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Jess Thirlby's unexpected departure as England netball head coach has raised eyebrows among observers, with Sky Sports expert Tamsin Greenway questioning the timing of a move that leaves the squad just four months away from the Commonwealth Games.

The announcement came on Tuesday that Thirlby would step down with immediate effect after nearly seven years leading the programme. She cited a desire to prioritise her family as the driving force behind the decision, paving the way for assistant coach Anna Stembridge to assume the head coach role for England's Glasgow campaign.

Thirlby's final assignment ended in disappointment last month when England lost a 2-1 series against South Africa, a result that carried particular significance given the two nations will meet again during the Commonwealth Games pool stage.

There have been rumblings coming off the back of playing South Africa bearing in mind we have to play them in the pool round of the Commonwealth Games, and Australia, which are two massive games
, Greenway told Sky Sports, reflecting on the circumstances surrounding the coaching change.

The former England international acknowledged the unpredictability that has defined the team's recent trajectory.

As an England fan looking at it in the background, it's been a rollercoaster ride. There have been some incredible moments in her six-and-a-half years, the Netball World Cup final, that was ground-breaking.

England's recent record has indeed been mixed. The squad reached the final of the 2023 Netball World Cup but fell short, losing 61–45 to Australia. More recently, according to BBC Sport, England finished fourth at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after losing 68–50 to Australia in the bronze-medal match. The team also failed to medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games despite entering as defending champions following their 2018 triumph.

Greenway pointed to the broader context of inconsistency at the international level.

You only have to go back 12 months previous and we didn't medal at the last Commonwealth Games, so it's been very up and down.

The timing of Thirlby's exit remains contentious.

It does seem to strange to do it now, there have been bigger and different opportunities where it probably could have happened to give the new coaching team a longer lead up to a big competition. But coming off the back of that South Africa series they probably didn't feel like it could continue.

In July, according to BBC Sport, Thirlby reflected on her decision, saying that missing the Commonwealth Games was "horrible" but that she remained content with her choice to resign for family reasons.

Stembridge's proven track record offers stability

Stembridge brings significant experience to the role, having previously served as England head coach from 2011 to 2015. During her first year in that position, she led the side to gold at the World Netball Series in Liverpool. Her appointment now mirrors a similar transition that occurred over a decade ago, when she stepped into the role following a coaching change.

Greenway drew parallels with that earlier period.

It was what we needed, it freshened it up, it was probably what the group needed, the group was good enough but it just needed a different outlook.

The new coaching structure includes former Roses captain Olivia Murphy joining as an assistant coach on secondment from Loughborough Sport, alongside specialist coaches Sharni Layton and Jo Harten. According to Team England, the 2026 Commonwealth squad comprised 12 athletes, with Fran Williams serving as captain.

Greenway acknowledged Stembridge's credentials while recognising the inherent risks of such a transition.

She was there, she has been in the mix, she's done it before. You can't really go overseas with a new group. It is a risk when you do this. I think it's getting to the bottom of why it's happened.

They'll be some big names in there. Liv Murphy, who has played at the top level and masterminded Loughborough Lightning's success for many years. Of course Sharni Layton and Jo Harten, two key internationals who the players will respect a lot.

Fresh direction or continuity challenge

While Stembridge represents a familiar and proven option, Greenway suggested that Thirlby's departure could signal an opportunity for England to chart a new course with a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

This is a group of athletes that could very well go and win the gold medal.

The Sky Sports analyst highlighted the potential for a cultural reset.

If it is just a cultural piece, about miscommunication between players and staff, they've lost a bit of trust, then actually it could be the freshen-up they need. But it is a risk. You've kept a group of coaches in there that have been in this regime so they have to get to the bottom of this, understand what the players need and work out very quickly what this campaign will look like.

Consistency at the international level remains a concern.

We've had incredible games overseas against Australia and New Zealand and then lost the South Africa series 2-1. If you want to compete at the world stage that consistency matters. If you are going to move the coach at this point or if she is going to step away you have to have some level of consistency going into this competition.

Greenway credited Thirlby's tenure for developing several world-class players.

To her credit Jess Thirlby has brought through the likes of Liv Tchine, Funmi Fadoju, the leadership of Fran Williams. These have become world class players on the world stage, but I think now is the opportunity to rip the band-aid off on the back of the Commonwealth Games and go 'what is it we're looking for now?'.

The analyst raised questions about the broader structure of the England programme.

Now we've got a professional Super League, how can we integrate that programme better? And who are the coaches out there?

Stembridge's inexperience at the helm in recent years presents another consideration.

In Anna Stembridge's defence, she has been there and done it, but she hasn't actually been a head coach for a very long time and it will be interesting because when it gets round to the Commonwealth Games they will be in goal-for-goal matches and high-pressure situations, that bench will have to make some cutthroat decisions.

Looking beyond Glasgow

According to BBC Sport, Stembridge indicated that discussions about the longer-term coaching role were expected after the Commonwealth Games, and that she would take time to decide what was right for her and England Netball.

Greenway suggested that the Commonwealth Games outcome should inform England's strategic direction beyond Glasgow.

I think they have to wait for the Commonwealth Games, but I think they would be naïve to think this is the only group that can take that team forward.

With a year until the next World Cup, the coaching staff faces a critical period to assess what the programme requires moving forward.

They've got a year to build-up to the World Cup and they need to decide what they actually want here and what is the building ground.
