Britain's Sonay Kartal delivered a masterclass performance to eliminate two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open.
The 24-year-old, making an impressive comeback after six months sidelined by a back injury, overwhelmed the 15th seed with a 6-2 6-0 victory that showcased her returning form. According to Tennis.com, Kartal entered the match ranked 170, facing an opponent seeded 15th and ranked 33rd in the world, yet she controlled the encounter from start to finish.
Paolini's performance was marred by inconsistency and unforced mistakes. According to Rotowire, the Italian committed 24 unforced errors—16 more than Kartal—as the British player seized every opportunity. The match proved decisive in its closing stages, with Kartal winning the final 11 games to complete a dominant victory.
The contest lasted just 1 hour 3 minutes, with Tennis Majors reporting that Kartal won 57 of 85 total points and converted six of nine break points. Her clinical execution on the court reflected a player rediscovering her best level after an extended absence.
From my side it was a pretty flawless performance so I'm very happy with that one
Kartal told the on-court interviewer, reflecting on a display that equalled her best performance at a WTA 1000 tournament—the top level of the women's tour. She had previously reached the quarter-finals in Beijing last year, and this run in Wuhan represents another significant milestone in her recovery.
The victory has positioned Kartal on the verge of a swift return to the top 100 rankings. According to Tennis.com, Kartal's career-high singles ranking stands at 44, and her performances this week suggest she is moving steadily back towards that level.
Chwalinska and Shnaider progress
Surprise French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska also booked her place in the quarter-finals with a commanding 6-4 6-1 victory over American Iva Jovic.
I think it was quite a solid match from my side. Iva is an amazing player. I knew that I needed to play my best game to get a win today. I think we had many very challenging rallies and it was a very physical match, I think, even though the score maybe doesn't show it, but it was definitely a very hard match.
Chwalinska explained in her post-match press conference, acknowledging the quality of her opponent despite the one-sided scoreline.
Diana Shnaider produced another upset by defeating sixth seed and Wimbledon finalist Karolina Muchova 7-5 6-3, continuing her impressive run through the tournament.
Swiatek keeps WTA Finals hopes alive
Iga Swiatek capitalised on Muchova's exit by grinding out a 6-1 6-4 victory over American Ashlyn Krueger, maintaining her push to qualify for the WTA Finals. The Polish player sits 10th in the race to the season-ending event, with the top eight qualifying for the tournament at Indian Wells next month.
A title win in Wuhan would allow Swiatek to apply significant pressure on Muchova in the race to secure a Finals spot. Swiatek has reached the WTA Finals every year since 2021, making qualification a priority as the season enters its final stretch.
Zverev advances in Shanghai
At the Shanghai Masters, top-ranked Alexander Zverev continued his campaign despite carrying an ankle injury, defeating Alex de Minaur 6-4 6-4 to reach the semi-finals.
The German produced a commanding display, making 80 per cent of his first serves and saving all five break points he faced. His performance set up a semi-final meeting with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
I felt both of us were playing really, really well. I was a lot of times outhitting Alex, which is difficult to do from the baseline because he is so fast and he loves this kind of court speed here. I felt good and I'm happy with the step up from the last couple of matches.
Zverev told reporters after the match. The 27-year-old secured the year-end No 1 ranking earlier in the week, and his continued form in Shanghai demonstrates his ability to maintain momentum through the season's final tournaments.
Kartal's quarter-final challenge
Kartal will next face fifth seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals. Svitolina advanced by defeating Chinese wild card Guo Hanyu 6-1 6-4, breaking her opponent's serve in both the opening and final games of the match.
