An Australian tennis star who once beat the iconic Serena Williams has withdrawn from the US Open. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz has left fans gobsmacked with a new look ahead of his impending return.

The Spaniard has been sidelined for most of the 2026 season due to a recurring wrist injury. However, fans are building excitement for Alcaraz's return to Flushing Meadows as he shares recovery snaps on Instagram.

Meanwhile, one star who won't be heading Stateside is Ajla Tomljanovic, who bid farewell to a "tough" campaign marred by minor injuries. The Australian announced her withdrawal from the US Open on social media and insists her focus is on the upcoming 2027 season.

Alcaraz is no stranger to reinventing his hairstyle, but his striking cornrow look has left supporters completely speechless.

The Spaniard has experimented with a host of bold styles, having shaved his head at last year's US Open and drawing comparisons to a young David Beckham in the process.

The 23-year-old went platinum blonde with cropped hair before the Laver Cup, before allowing it to grow back to his natural brunette shade ahead of the 2026 season.

Following his Australian Open triumph and a string of injury-enforced withdrawals, Alcaraz reverted to a longer, more relaxed style.

This was the very same hairstyle he sported at the World Cup final, where he cheered on his beloved Spain as they defeated Argentina to lift the trophy.

Now, eagle-eyed fans have clocked the tennis ace showcasing cornrows in a recent Instagram post.

This snapshot was one of 16 images featured in the 'Insta dump' but supporters were most taken aback by this photograph.

One branded the look the "unexpected hairstyle of the summer."

For 2 hot seconds... I thought I was looking at a young Drake, sorry Carlos, but glad you're enjoying the summer.

A third noted: "From Blondecaraz to Cornrowlitos, he keeps tennis stylish & fun!"

Supporters also mentioned his eagerly-awaited return to tennis while praising his fresh appearance.

Can't wait to see you and the braids back on court.

Tomljanovic has withdrawn from the US Open due to minor injuries that have coincided with a 'tough' season.

The 33-year-old confirmed on social media that she won't be competing at Flushing Meadows next month and is focused on preparing for next year.

Posting on Instagram, the Australian said:

It has been a tough year battling minor injuries, so I've decided to end my season earlier than planned to be healthy and ready for 2027.

Following her withdrawal, German tennis player Ella Seidel has been entered into the main draw.

Tomljanovic's major tennis highlight came at the 2022 US Open, where she knocked Serena Williams out in the third round.

This proved to be Williams' last match ahead of her initial retirement, and the Australian paid tribute to her following the win.

I'm feeling really sorry, just because I love Serena just as much as you guys do. And what she's done for me, for the sport of tennis, is incredible... she is the greatest of all time.
Ajla Tomljanovic.
