The England batter demonstrated considerable resilience against the unpredictable bounce that characterised the Lord's surface, constructing an impressive 64-ball half-century to propel his team to 177-7 at the close of play.
Saturday morning proved frustrating for both sides as intermittent showers interrupted play for nearly three-and-a-half hours. Emilio Gay and Harry Brook eventually took to the crease at 2.20pm once conditions improved sufficiently.
