Kevin Pietersen is stepping into a specialist mentor role with England's white-ball teams as they prepare for next year's Cricket World Cup across Africa. The former England captain will begin working with Brendon McCullum's squads during the forthcoming T20 international and ODI series against Sri Lanka scheduled for later this month.
Pietersen's appointment adds to a coaching structure that already features Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor. His involvement will extend through the winter white-ball tours to Australia and South Africa, before rejoining the teams for home series against Pakistan and New Zealand next summer, culminating in the World Cup tournament across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The move comes after Pietersen had signalled his openness to an England coaching role earlier in 2026. According to Reuters, the former batsman indicated he was "available for discussion" with the ECB about potential involvement with the national team. At that time, Yahoo Sports reported that Pietersen described himself as "a white ball YouTuber" when responding to questions about England's Test coaching vacancy, signalling his focus remained on the shorter formats rather than red-ball cricket.
Pietersen recently stepped away from his mentor position with Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season. According to the Hindustan Times, he withdrew from the franchise role because he could not commit the necessary time, effectively freeing him up to pursue other opportunities including this England position.
Reflecting on his appointment, Pietersen expressed his enthusiasm for the role.

Pietersen's international career spanned a decade during which he accumulated substantial experience across all three formats. Over 136 ODI appearances, he scored more than 5,500 runs, while his 37 T20 matches added further credentials in the shorter game. His Test record proved equally impressive, with 104 appearances yielding 8,181 runs. He won the Ashes during his England career and also claimed a T20 World Cup title.
The appointment represents a significant moment for Pietersen, marking his return to involvement with the England setup after his international retirement in 2014.
