Mikel Arteta has put pen to paper on a fresh long-term contract extension at Arsenal, securing his future at the club he has transformed into Premier League champions.

The 44-year-old Spanish manager's previous deal, agreed in September 2024, had been set to expire in the summer of 2025. His new commitment represents a significant show of faith from the club's ownership and marks a watershed moment in Arsenal's recent history.

Since arriving in December 2019, Arteta has overseen a remarkable turnaround in the Gunners' fortunes. He guided the north London side to their first top-flight title in 22 years last season, ending a period of three consecutive second-place finishes that had frustrated supporters and the board alike.

Beyond the Premier League triumph, Arteta's achievements include leading Arsenal to only their second Champions League final appearance in the club's history, though that showpiece ended in heartbreak against Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. He has also secured an FA Cup and three Community Shield victories during his tenure.

According to BBC Sport, the new deal is expected to extend Arteta's time at the club into at least his 10th year, representing a substantial commitment from both parties. The contract also brings a significant financial uplift, with BBC Sport reporting that his current package of £10m annually plus up to £5m in performance bonuses will be substantially improved.

Arteta expressed his delight at the agreement in a statement released by the club.

It's a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal,
he said.

This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue.

The manager went on to emphasise the special nature of his relationship with the club and its supporters.

We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together,
he continued.

I'm extremely grateful to Stan and Josh for their trust and support, and feel honoured to be leading this club through such a special period in its 140-year history.

This is such a proud moment for me and my family. I feel the love and respect from our fantastic supporters, and they have mine - and ours - in return.

Club's commitment to winning era

Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick underlined the club's ambitions in his own statement, framing the contract renewal as part of a broader strategy to establish sustained success.

This is an important time in Arsenal Football Club's history. We want to create a winning era together with Mikel,
Garlick said.

We will continue to work hard together as we aim to fulfil our long-term ambitions for the club and our supporters.

Mikel has the belief, determination and the understanding of what it takes to build something remarkable and enduring here, and we are excited to continue that journey together.

The renewal comes after months of speculation about Arteta's future. In August, the manager had insisted that contract discussions would be resolved in an organic way, with reports at that time suggesting talks might be paused until after the season concluded. Arsenal's co-chair Josh Kroenke had previously called keeping Arteta an "utmost priority" following the club's title-winning campaign.

According to ESPN, Arteta had agreed improved terms by late September, with the formal announcement coming shortly after. The news represents a decisive statement of intent from Arsenal's ownership as the club looks to build on last season's success and challenge for further silverware.

What comes next

Arsenal's next Premier League fixture is scheduled for 10 October against Leeds, giving the club an opportunity to build momentum under their newly committed manager. The contract extension provides stability at a crucial juncture as Arteta continues to develop the squad and pursue the club's long-term objectives.
