Sky Sports and Guinness expand Premier League access with live subtitles and descriptive audio

Sky Sports and Guinness have unveiled a comprehensive accessibility programme designed to bring Premier League football within reach of blind, partially sighted and hard-of-hearing supporters. The initiative, built on Guinness' existing Sky Sports Premier League sponsorship, represents the broadcaster's most ambitious accessibility rollout to date.

Starting with Manchester United versus Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday October 10 and Liverpool versus Manchester City on Sunday October 11, all Premier League matches shown on Sky Sports' main channels will feature Live Subtitles. Additionally, Live Descriptive Audio Commentary will roll out across selected fixtures throughout the season, with both services fully integrated into the standard viewing experience.

The dual-service approach reflects a shared commitment from Sky Sports and Guinness to ensure that live football can be enjoyed by the broadest possible audience, whether supporters are watching alone at home, with family and friends, or in communal settings.

Understanding Live Descriptive Audio Commentary

The Descriptive Audio Commentary service has been purpose-built for supporters living with sight loss, marking a departure from conventional audio description techniques used in television broadcasting.

Rather than inserting occasional explanatory passages into coverage, this new feed delivers continuous narration that mirrors the style of traditional radio match commentary. The enhanced service guides listeners through the flow of play, capturing key moments, the atmosphere inside the stadium, off-pitch activity and on-field action as events unfold in real time. This creates a richer, more immersive experience that allows blind and partially sighted fans to follow the match with greater depth and engagement.

The service has been shaped through extensive consultation with representative users, accessibility specialists, Sky Access Services and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). The RNIB's involvement throughout development has been instrumental in ensuring the final product meets the genuine needs and expectations of blind and partially sighted supporters. This collaborative approach mirrors similar initiatives elsewhere in broadcasting; ITV trialled descriptive audio commentary for live sport during the 2024 Six Nations, including England's matches against Wales and Ireland, demonstrating growing industry recognition of the demand for such services.

Live Subtitles Across All Front-Channel Matches

Complementing the Descriptive Audio Commentary, Live Subtitles will be available on every front-channel Premier League match broadcast by Sky Sports. The subtitling service enables viewers to follow live commentary, analysis and on-screen dialogue in real time, making coverage substantially more accessible for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences.

The two services together represent a significant advancement in making live sport inclusive for a wider demographic. Sky has already established itself as a leader in subtitle provision; more than 80% of programming on Sky Sports channels and Sky News is currently subtitled, with subtitles also available on Sky Go for live television and on-demand content. This new Premier League initiative extends that commitment to the broadcaster's flagship football coverage.

How to Access Both Services

Both Live Descriptive Audio Commentary and Live Subtitles are seamlessly woven into the viewing experience and require only a few simple steps to activate.

To enable Live Descriptive Audio Commentary, supporters can check availability through the Sky TV Guide. When a match features the service, an AD logo will appear next to the programme title, and a short beep will sound to alert viewers to its presence. Fans can then select the audio feed from their remote control.

Live Subtitles can be toggled on or off using standard subtitle controls on the Sky remote, making the feature accessible to anyone familiar with existing subtitle functionality.

Making Football Accessible for All

The partnership underscores a mutual determination by Sky Sports and Guinness to remove barriers that prevent supporters from experiencing Premier League football. By rolling out both Live Subtitles and Live Descriptive Audio Commentary across all front-channel Premier League coverage, the initiative aims to deepen engagement for blind, partially sighted and hard-of-hearing fans while preserving the communal nature of watching live football together.

The accessibility expansion demonstrates that major broadcasters and sponsors increasingly recognise their responsibility to serve audiences beyond the mainstream. As live sport continues to evolve, initiatives like this set a benchmark for inclusive coverage that welcomes every supporter, regardless of sensory ability.
