Rarely do sporting achievements arrive without considerable effort and sacrifice. Whether targeting league titles or securing spots in the top three, the Women's Super League has become increasingly unpredictable season after season—and Tottenham are among numerous clubs harbouring ambitions of claiming silverware.
Spurs opened their 2026/27 campaign in commanding fashion, dismantling Crystal Palace and Aston Villa with a combined scoreline of 11-0. That early momentum came to an abrupt halt, however, when London City Lionesses inflicted a 6-1 reverse on the north London outfit before the international window.
The heavy loss served as a sobering reality check for manager Martin Ho and his squad regarding the scale of the challenge ahead if they are to secure Champions League qualification this term. The fixture list offers little respite, with two of England's traditional powerhouses—Chelsea and Arsenal—looming large. The immediate test arrives at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with the match broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Ho, who has steered Spurs from relegation-form obscurity to European contention in under 18 months since his appointment from Brann, remains grounded about the journey ahead. The former Norwegian coach recognises that sustained excellence demands resilience through inevitable fluctuations.
In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Ho outlined his philosophy:
You're always optimistic that it can go well, but I'm also realistic that you don't just have this long-term success. It's not linear, there's going to be ups and downs, but I know if you want long-term consistency, you're going to have to have this.
He continued:
We can't just go from being a team that's been fighting at the bottom of the table to go and challenge for the [WSL] trophy and make that successful and consistent over years to come. There's a process to that but the ambition is always to be at the top of that table.
Raising Standards and Squad Culture
Since arriving at the club, Ho has made elevating performance standards and expectations among staff and players a cornerstone of his tenure.
Since coming in, I've tried to push standards, push the expectation with staff and players to give us a platform that can give us an opportunity to progress.
The playing squad has responded with evident commitment and professionalism.
The players deserve a lot of credit for that because they take the information and run with it. They play with courage, bravery, with personality which is what I asked for and their commitment and willingness is first class.
Ho acknowledged that the speed of transformation has exceeded his initial expectations.
Maybe there were times early on when I thought it was going to take a lot longer to get to where we want to be identity-wise, but the players deserve the credit because they've enabled us to maybe accelerate a little bit quicker than what I probably thought.
Strategic Recruitment and Squad Building
Much of Spurs' rapid ascent has been underpinned by astute recruitment decisions, particularly during the summer window. The club secured Champions League-winning midfielder Victoria Pelova from Arsenal and forward Alice Sombath from Lyon, while defender Caitlin Dijkstra arrived from Wolfsburg. According to ESPN Africa, Tottenham's summer additions totalled six players: Kirsty Hanson, Shekiera Martinez, Dijkstra, Pelova, Sombath and Selma Panengstuen.
Ho's recruitment strategy reflects a 12-month blueprint established after his July 2025 appointment, with key targets identified across multiple transfer windows. According to BBC Sport, Spurs broke their club transfer record to bring Sombath to the club from Lyon, though her fee remained undisclosed, following the earlier January signing of Signe Gaupset for approximately £375,000.
Ho explained the rationale behind his acquisitions:
We felt like we needed certain qualities in certain positions and those players that have come in have allowed us to do that.
The new arrivals bring diverse competitive experiences from domestic, European and international football.
They've also been in environments where they've been competing in different ways, they'll bring those experiences here which was important for us that we have a diverse environment and culture.
Balancing youth development with established experience remains central to Ho's squad construction philosophy.
You also want to make sure you get a balance also between the youth and experience of the squad. You want to get a balance of where you feel relationships can be built and where they can be long-term on the pitch.
Pelova's Redemption and Sombath's Potential
Pelova's arrival exemplifies Ho's approach to recruitment. The midfielder, who departed Arsenal, had been managing confidence issues following a prolonged injury layoff.
Alice [Sombath] was one of those in that position where she's had such wonderful experiences at Lyon of winning titles, but also internationally, she's got really good credibility at such a young age. The opportunity to bring her in was huge for us and someone we have followed for a while.
Regarding Pelova specifically, Ho reflected:
Then people like Victoria [Pelova], who's coming off the back of a long-term injury. She was maybe low of confidence and wasn't in a place where she felt her football could go forward. The opportunity to bring her here after having those conversations was important.
Pelova has responded emphatically to her fresh start. She currently shares the WSL's top-scorer position with five goals, level with Manchester City's Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw and Birmingham's Oceane Hurtre.
Ho emphasised the value of Pelova's winning mentality:
She's been part of a winning culture and a winning environment and those environments are what we want to bring to the club, which she can share and we can lean on those experiences from her.
The midfielder's transformation has been striking.
But since she's come in, she's been outstanding in terms of giving her the enthusiasm again to play football, but giving her the confidence and belief she can achieve what she wants in terms of own ambitions.
The Chelsea Test and London Derbies
Chelsea currently occupy second place in the WSL table, two points behind leaders Manchester City, while Tottenham sit fourth. According to Chelsea FC's official website, the Blues won all three meetings with Spurs last season, claiming victories in two WSL matches and an FA Cup tie.
The top three finishers in the WSL secure qualification for the Women's Champions League, making European football the threshold of Spurs' ambitions this season.
Ho stressed the importance of competing in high-stakes fixtures:
You have to show a willingness to compete in those games first. You go in with the mindset and the objective is always to win the game, but we have to look at the process behind that first and the performance has to allow you to be in that position psychologically.
He acknowledged the intensity of London derbies:
Are they going to be tough games? 100 percent, but they're the games you want to play and I want to play in as a coach, the players want to play in. The commercial interest is big in those because they're London derbies so you have to embrace them as a player.
Yet Ho cautioned against reading too much into individual results.
But they're the ones where you will really see the character and belief of the group, they're the ones where you'll really see the development and the progress of the team, but one game doesn't tell you if you're a good team or a bad team.
He added:
It maybe gives you some answers in terms of where we need to go and the direction we need to go in, but it doesn't define you.
The Road Ahead
Following their damaging defeat to London City Lionesses, Spurs face a defining fortnight. While individual matches may not determine their season, the results could significantly influence their final league position come May.
Chelsea host Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, 18 October 2026, with kick-off at 12 noon UK time, broadcast live on Sky Sports Football and Mix.
Tottenham then travel to the Emirates to face Arsenal in the north London derby on 25 October at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with a 2pm kick-off scheduled. That fixture offers Spurs an opportunity for revenge, as their sole victory against the Gunners in any competition came at their own stadium.
