Friday's racing action at Chepstow delivered compelling jumps racing across a full card, with the feature Grade Two DragonBet Persian War Novices' Hurdle providing the standout contest of the day.
Persian War Novices' Hurdle: Cosmic Connection prevails in quality renewal
The Chris Gordon-trained Cosmic Connection claimed victory in a deep renewal of the feature Grade Two DragonBet Persian War Novices' Hurdle, where the progressive gelding faced stiff opposition from Lord Byron and other strong contenders.
Cosmic Connection arrived at Chepstow having won three of his four outings over hurdles, with a dominant display in the Novices' Championship Final at Sandown when last seen in April serving as his most recent outing. Stepping up in both grade and distance, the prospect demonstrated his credentials for the campaign ahead by securing the prize.
According to Sporting Life, Cosmic Connection won ahead of Lord Byron in second and North Shore in third, with the race run over 2m 3f 100y for a £45,560 winner's prize from a field of 11 runners.
Lord Byron had enjoyed a solid novice season, finishing fifth in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham before claiming fourth at Aintree. The gelding bettered those efforts when chasing home King Rasko Grey at Punchestown, and fitness proved no concern having had a pipe opener on the flat the previous month.
North Shore, trained by The Skelton team, finished third and demonstrated the strength of the renewal. Lock Stock, bidding for a hat-trick, was also among the runners but could not add to his tally on the day.
Welsh Champion Hurdle: Gibbs Island claims spoils in competitive contest
The DragonBet Welsh Champion Hurdle at 3.12pm produced another thrilling encounter, with Gibbs Island emerging victorious in a super edition of the race.
Dan Skelton's Le Beau Madrik had taken well to hurdles, suffering just a sole defeat in his four starts prior to the race. The form of his latest Haydock success had been boosted, and he made appeal on his handicap debut under Harry Skelton. However, Le Beau Madrik finished third in the contest.
Captain Hugo, trained by Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, held obvious claims for the prize as a three-time winner over obstacles. He had run with credit when second in the Scottish Hurdle and remained capable of better, but did not feature among the first three.
According to Racing TV, Gibbs Island took the honours with Doctor Blue in second and Le Beau Madrik third. The race was contested over 2m 16y with 17 runners declared and £26,015 going to the winner.
Sam Thomas, who took this prize with Celtic Dino the previous season, fielded Doctor Blue this year. Serious Challenge was another runner who warranted a second look in the competitive field.
Novices' Hurdle: Saint Jeannais makes winning debut over jumps
Saint Jeannais made a winning start to his jumping career in the Wasdell Group Novices' Hurdle at 1.57pm, securing his second success from two starts.
The Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies-trained six-year-old had scored on the first of two starts in bumpers before making a sparkling debut over jumps, winning easily at Bangor-on-Dee. Jumping nicely, the gelding rates a smart prospect with the promise of more to come.
Hive Runner justified favouritism when landing a Larkhill maiden point-to-point in February and warranted watching in the betting on his rules debut for Tom Lacey and Stan Sheppard.
Dan Skelton's Dutch Corner, rated 117 after five starts over hurdles, must be feared in similar contests. Sharu was another to note on his first start for Carroll Gray.
Supporting races and additional action
The card featured several other competitive contests throughout the afternoon. Paddy Brennan ran King's Scholar in the 1.22 opener, whilst the 4.17 race saw 11-year-old Opening Bid debut for Joe Tizzard. Sheezer Diva made her handicap debut for the Skelton team in the 5.31 contest.
According to At The Races, the races formed part of day one of the DragonBet Welsh Racing Festival at Chepstow, underlining the significance of the card.
